Phone sat-nav VS tomtom....

Featured Replies

Trying to weigh up the pros and cons of either updating my TomTom (GO700) with a latest map or just using my Xperia X10 (with either google nav, or Waze) to take me to Prague in September. How up to date are phone / google maps in terms of new roads etc?

The only issue I have found so far using my phone is that you need a data connection. Tomtom has maps on board whereas the phone has to download as it goes. Could be expensive abroad + you need a half decent data connection...

As above. A data connection is needed for google navigation.

I got Sygic navigation a few months back when it was on special offer. Works very well and includes european mapping (all of which is stored on the SD card).

We have a TomTom but hardly use it these days as I normally just use my phone as it connects to the car bluetooth and shouts the instructions through the speakers. Also the TomTom doesn't have european maps so when we go to Germany it's no good.

See if you can get Sygic. It has 3d buildings. I have it on android but it may be available on others

Don't know how much for updated maps on the TomTom but Sygic europe is currently £44.99 which might be cheaper than updating your TomTom maps.

I paid £14.99 a few months back.

I'm using Tomtom on my iPhone, it works great and you get free map updates with all versions. The update this week gave me the latest map and integration with Facebook so you can navigate to friends who check in.

Think that's what I paid. They had a sale on didn't they.

He has an Android phone btw. Though I think tomtom is available for that too.

Thanks chaps. I do have a "western and central europe" map on my Go700 but its from about late 2008 I think, maybe even older. So it is likely to be a bit out of date. I might still just take a punt and use it again. Not a massive amount is likely to have changed in 4 years or so, at least not with the major roads.

Tom Tom isn't currently available for Android, but just a matter of time until it is.

When I went over to Italy last year I swapped over from using Google Navigation to CoPilot. Not as good in my opinion but was far better than incurring the chronic mobile data charges I would have incurred. Of course when in the UK I would use the Google App every time.

Sygic is more visually pleasing with the 3d buildings, and may be helpfull walking around Prague if thats supported on that map.

Depends on whether you can read the screen on a smartphone or not...... I struggle these days, so like the large screen of my Columbus.

Now, Tom Tom on an iPad....... that would be good.

I have Co-Pilot Live on my android phones its available on apple too its FULL sat nav maps for europe on the phone takes up like 2 or 3 gb I think but its fantastic use it on my old cheapo ZTE Blade (Orange San Francisco) and my Samsung Galaxy SII perfect and its not overly expensive to pay for (some unscrupulous people don't pay and just download it in a torrent for android phones......)

Beats TomTom and Garmin for me and even the mighty Columbus no data usage on phone unless you select live traffic updates.

I can't recommend it highly enough its spot on!

I've tried CoPilot, Navigon, Navmi Tom Tom and I'm sure there are others, but I always rely on my Columbus. The only one I have on my iPhone is Tom Tom for when im out walking, or not in my car. The others I just could not get on with.

It is all down to personal preference.

maybe of no help at all, but I use my trusty Nokia 5230 with Ovi Maps, used it in Germany 18 months ago with no issues (Iforget now the setting I used so it wouldn't connect to a network, ie, satellite only) and compared with my brothers TomTom (model number forgotten!) that got me places he got lost!
