Fabia 77tsi very poor economy

Featured Replies

Hi I recently less than a month ago purchased a new skoda fabia 77 tsi, and I tested the fuel economy, I filled it up to the first clock after 102km of driving from the same petrol station drove a combined cycle of at least 35km highway and the rest at around 60-80km and a bit in the city and I am getting 9.4l per 100km not the 5.5 claimed, I never let RPM go past 2500 i shift at usually 2 like it tells me to, I never ever trash the car and its a new car, only 653km on the odometer. It has not even gotten its first service. Other parts of the car are already failing such as the interior trim and the paint. What is causing the economy problem? Is it normal to use more than a 4l 6 cylinder ford falcon?

I am presuming you are using the 77Kw/ 105 hp 1.2 TSI?

We have a couple of TSIs and an HTP 1.2.

You will see all over threads on this web site that these cars do take up to around 10K Kms to settle in.

Not sure if this is the engine running in and internal friction reducing, carbon deposits gas flowing the engine and non engine components also bedding in and probably a mixture of all 3 and possibly others.

The TSI is quite an engine and take at least twice as long to get up to temperature, and give good ie the near quoted, fuel consumption compared to the HTP non turbo'd engines.

Should settle down to doing about 6 litres per 100 Km.

Turbo is giving free energy and so it is better to let the engine rev to 3K revs on light load rather than change up to early and move below the 1600 rpm level.  Light throttle is the key to economy not just low revs.

Engine is a cracker, give it some time.  Check tyre pressures, drive with forward thinking.  Enjoy.

As said above they do take some time to loosen up and start getting the book figures.

Also what are the recomended running in procedures? I'm sure you are advised to rev the engine at certain times (ie after "x" miles allow the revs to go between "x & x" rpm then after so many more miles allow it to go further etc etc).

It isn't good for a new engine to never be revved. It can cause excessive wear in th engine and do more damage than good.

Phil

Drive it like normal and give it some time as above.

Thanks for the replies, I didnt know engine settling cant ake that long i thought it was 1500km and I didnt think settling would have impact on economy. 10,000km is allot.

Tbh iv read people with vrs' gaining better economy as long as 10,000 miles (16,000km) so its a bit of a waiting game
