Is it safe?... LED bulbs.

Featured Replies

Just want to know....

Is it safe to use LED's as replacement bulbs on my 05 Fabia 1.4 Tdi without any other modifications?

I've heard that they can cause some electrickery problems, is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

Legality aside (if they're not 'e' marked they can't be used on the road) then as your car is going to be CANBUS then you'll need to load the circuit with resistors to simulate the power draw of a bulb, most sellers offer specific CANBUS LED's to simulate this and not cause the bulb out warning to flash up.

Philips LED Bulbs do not require resistors, they can be connected either way round and do not throw up a warning.

Removed mine today as the car is going in for MOT tommorrow and they are not road legal.

Cheers Avalon,

I guess I'll leave them as is then... ;)

I have LED number plate bulbs in mine and it has just today passed the MOT with them in. Maybe they didn't check the light properly and with it being daytime couldn't really tell they were LED?

I did have LED's in the front sidelights too but one of them started flickering (probably due to ebay cheapo specials).

Phil

I have led interior bulbs. Lovely and bright. Loads better than stock.

Im not an mot tester, but time to time get the job of pre mot checks. Aslong as they dont shine very high, or have the wrong colour tint they usualy go through no problem.

i've passed all the reg bulbs ive seen, only fail them if they are not on or the lens is coverd with rust or somthing from the boot.

People seem to get the impression mot testers are extremely strict and want to fail your car on everything and anything.... what it comes down to is safety, if your fitting bulbs that you know for a fact are illegal and are going to cause nuisance to other drivers, why do it?

Some MOT testers are stupidly strict however usually they're the ones who also carry out the remedial work to rectify the faults identified. I use testers who rent test bays by the test, they have no interest in the outcome as they simply pay for the use of the bay and don't do other work. They also can't remove a bulb to check if it's e marked so as pointed out by hutchysrs50 unless it's blue on the front etc then it'll probably pass, my old car certainly did and that had LED 501's for the plate and side lights. I switched back from LED brake lights after following my car, Phillips fast illumination brake lights were a heck of a lot brighter.

The fabia has a warning light for the brake lights but its not canbus, you can stick any side/number plate bulbs in and no warnings come up.

Personally the only leds I've found that are actually worth buying are the Phillips ones, whilst they are expensive, they last and they are e marked

My £3 cheapies from ebay are about two years old now and still going strong

in both the sidelights and the 2 map lights inside the car, I have another ebay £4 cheapy

12 smd panel led in the centre interior light all work perfect and I don't get the glow when

they are off like some I've heard of on here.

The numberplate leds are just as old but I paid a little more for them tbh, I got them

from Powerbulbs for about £8 for the pair.

The only leds I've had any trouble with are the strip led that runs along my parcel

shelf to illuminate the bootspace. They do remain on and drain the battery, so I have

a small plug in line to disconnect them when the car isn't being used much.
