Fan-related noises

Featured Replies

Noticed just lately that the car has developed an annoying "clicky" noise whenever the internal ventilation fans are on (which is all the time for me!). Best way to describe the noise is like something fouling a fan blade so it's a regular click-click-click and it seems to be coming from the centre of the dash behind the vents. Fans are still chucking out as much cold/hot air as ever and everything seems to be functioning fine...

Anyone had anything similar and managed to solve it as it's driving me mad at the moment......? I'm wondering if it could be leaves in the system or something like that, although interestingly, turning the fans up doesn't make it "click" any faster........

Are you sure it's the fan? Sounds more like your engine is not in tune. When an engine is not in tune you tend to get the 'click click' noise your talking about. I think fine-tuning the engine should fix that problem...I may be wrong though, it COULD be the fan...with my car it's not tuned...

Can you hear the 'click' sound from inside the car?

My 328i was doing similar things before I sold it. Is yours the climate control model? It was something to do with the auto ventilation circuitry continuously opening and closing the butterflies in the HVAC system. I just turned it off auto in the end as I knew I was selling. Other than that, no ideas. Sorry

Mines doing exactly the same. It's a leaf or something similar caught in the fan. If you remove the glovebox and the pollen filter and then put the ventilation onto recirc you can reach inside the recirc vent and usually dislodge whatever it is. Make sure you turn the ignition back off before you reach inside the fan for fairly obvious reasons

Thanks for the replies. It's definitely heard in the cabin and, despite what I said, does get faster as you turn up the fan and goes completely if the fan is off.

I think I'll try vrsFab's suggestions first as the climate control does seem to be churning out air of the right temperature so I'm assuming for the time being, the circuitry is ok. And thanks for the tip on turning off the ignition ;)
