Help - Noisy Turbo & Wastegate - Worry Or Enjoy It ?

Featured Replies

Over the last few weeks the turbo whistle has started to get a little bit noisier, but I put that down to the hot weather, thinner air, the ECU compensating etc.

However over the weekend I've been doing some driving around Cumbria putting more load on the engine and when you lift off the throttle after accelerating, or engine is under load you get a noticable noise, a cross betweena chatter & a hiss. Sounds like the old wastegate dump valve sound you get from scoobies only not quite so loud.

a) Is this normal ?

B) If so, why has it only started to appear after 19k miles ?

thanks in advance

Carl.

The standard plastic dump valve diaphragm is prone to splitting which I was aware of since my Audi days. When I got my 4x4 (with 19k oddly enough) I took it to be Jabba remapped after a few miles and they found the same problem, replacing it with a motorsport spec one.

This is actually whooshier than standard but I bought it to save having to replace it again and to cope with the increased boost. Its noisier than my Impreza's was but to be honest thats because the engine is otherwise a LOT quieter !

What did you get, Rob? A Bailey?

Nick

Correct, a Bailey - I trusted Jabba to give me the one suitable for the 1.8T engine rather than the one that isn't !

I have these worrying thoughts at the moment of keeping the Skoda until it falls apart rather than getting some else after a couple of years. I (like many others) have owned some very decent cars and I can't level a major criticism against it. (The steathy looks and image thing are a big plus point after the Subarus).

The catch is that my plan involves keeping it to (say) 100000 miles, adding Brembo/Porsche brakes, 17 or 18" VW/Audi wheels, the KW v2 or Mad suspension, cruise control oh, and the Jabba big turbo plus a second remap to go with it. The amended version to this plan is to do all of this and buy a 911 Turbo for playing around with.

Back to life, back to reality

As Rob said it's not uncommon for the diaphragm to split -- common enough for our parts dept to keep at least 5 in stock at any time(only standard ones unfortunately).

Would go along with a change to motorsport type, will be doing so myself when mines goes to Jabba - which will hopefully be Mid-Aug......:airjock:

fabpreza get a turbo capri!

For

lol ended due to me being silly putting a silly low start price and have sold the alloys separately. have got much more money that way.

Thanks for the feedback re: the std plastic VAG part, just got a whole lot louder today & the service indicator came up this morning, so I think the car's trying to tell me it needs some tlc...

:(

But why only recommend a Bailly, you have a lot others like ABD, Forge, Porsche original DV or why not an Mitsubishi EVO DV?

I'd choose a Forge 007P DV myself.

Cheers,

FD

You are right - the Bailey is one of many options.

Many of us in the UK are going to JabbaSport for remaps - as they appear to be know what they are doing with the 1.8T engine, and they normally fit them from good experience.
