Subtle Remap

Featured Replies

I would like a subtle remap in my 06 petrol vrs, I've read several threads on here about this, but I only want a mild boost to say 220bhp / 230-240lb torque. I have no intention of changing anything else on the car, just want a bit more pep out of it without destroying the fuel economy, or altering its OE appearance; as I think mine is not delivering the manufacturers outputs (though the dealer view is that its fine).

The nearest pace to me is Westec performance in Newport so I'll give them a ring, but open to suggestions.....

mmm.....subtle reamp you say!

TBH if you're gonna do it, do it once and do it well! The best form of subtleness is in your right foot.

I have had my 2011 vRS mapped by Shark & rolling road at 255bhp / 325lb, so much higher than your requirements. However, on a day to day basis I don't use anywhere near its potential, and thats the point, just 'cos its there doesnt mean you have to use it every time you press the pedal.

The best part of the remap for me is the massive increase in torque, very diesel like (more in fact than most diesels), so very easy daily drive, and great for overtaking.

As far as mpg, I have never seen an increase as some claim, but never saw a decrease either.

My recommendation to you, if you want to remap, is to go for a full stage 1 and just show a little restraint.

As far as who to go with, I went with Shark (via remote STS), and very happy. There are also 2 or 3 others also highly recommended on here if you look.

I'm coming to the same conclusion. I like the idea of the shark STS, mainly because it's cheap! How easy is it to use?

Easy. Plug in STS via OBD port. Download stock map & email to Shark. Receive performance map back and upload to STS. Transfer back to car via OBD. Enjoy.

Don't forget the STS is an additional cost to the price of the map, but means you can swap maps whenever you want.

TFSI maps to a little less than TSI at around 240bhp, although some have seen higher.

Am going to give shark, angel and Igotboost near cardiff a call (who deal with REVO) and see what is possible. My concern in the long term is wearing the engine out faster, it's oil consumption is already only just acceptable in VAG eyes and I've already seen the dreaded low oil pressure flicker on during one rather fast roundabout....

Can i just say, mine is 200bhp and 302 lbs/ft torque and that it not really subtle, its not the fastest thing on the road by far but it gets you were you want to be and pretty quickly. 225bhp is more like stage 2 territory. Your going to pushing your luck a little there with 325lbs on OEM set up, if it does hold the power then its going to wear twice as fast, dependent on how you drive. Mappers can tune it to how to you like, but either way when it boost's from 225bhp your going to know about it.

Had a long chat with the chaps at Shark, need to check mine for a broken diverter valve as the performance seems a little weak right now, and am tempted by the stage 1 + the STS.

Agree, but as I said you don't have to use it all, all of the time. I gently squeeze the throttle most of the time, and dont pull full boost unless in a playful mood. Moreover if I did plant my foot most of the time i wouldnt have any tyres / clutch left after 5k!

My car is completely stock except for stage 1 and 10k later feels as good as new.

If I was to track the car or drive more aggressively on the roads then agree a better clutch / brakes / suspension etc is needed.

For me though a little self control is better value.

Changing the diverter valve is a good idea if you are going to remap as there have been a few changes to them over the years. I believe the latest one is a piston type but I am not sure of model number.

Not to expensive to change either

Gotboost are Revo and DNA tuning agents. I can highly recommend DNA after having 4 stages on my tfsi. Stage 1 is nice and smooth and no silly boost, mpg with me stayed what it was as standard.

If you go to DNA direct the map is £199 with a forum discount and they also sell the SRS unit (same as Shark Sts) which I believe is £150.

You're referring to a diesel presumably. The figures others are quoting are for the petrol engine. I would expect around 240 min from a stage 1 shark remap (their figures not mine), but only if the cut off valve is not damaged, and it would seem mine is. For example, pulling away from the severn bridge tolls yesterday, I only just managed to get in front of a BMW 118d and that was at nearly 3 figure speed! 200bhp+ in a diesel engine is going to pretty rapid by any benchmark, comparing these *headline* numbers doesn't mean much unless you are going to be driving at high speeds, it's what the torque curve looks like that has more significance.

I've ordered a new valve which will be fitted Tuesday, so am going to see what that does first of all, then think about the next step. If I do go with a remap, then it will be a shark STS, that much I have already decided.

The part # is 06H145710D, £55 inc vat from a dealer, seen one on ebay for £48. Am guessing an hours labour so another £40 to fit it. Fingers crossed this makes a significant improvement, as from the comments I hear from other owners is that in factory condition it should be much quicker than mine is....
