spare wheel question

Featured Replies

Hi all,put 2 new tyres on the fabia this morning and thought i'd check the spare while i was at it (aint had the spare out since i bought the car 6 months ago).I found to my ameusment that the spare wheel is a 50mph max/tempory use only wheel!!!

As it has a full/normal size tyre i thought it would be a normal steel wheel, are these wheels somehow differant to normal steel wheels? i know my old 06 vrs had a normal steel spare as i used it a couple of times. might just be me but i'd rather have a normal spare!

As it's a full size wheel I would check the rating of the tyre. The wheel may be the normal part but with a low speed rated tyre (cheap). If it's a normally rated tyre I would check the part no of the wheel and see if it is different to a normal steel of that size. Somebody may have just slapped the 50 sticker on it as it went down the line.

It's a normal full sized wheel and tyre - identical to the ones fitted to the Beetle and Bora etc with steel wheels

Only thing I can think of is them just covering their back as the spare is non-directional.

I think they throw the same spare in every car with the same rolling radius tyres, so as it's not the same width as every car tyre that it ends up in it has to be classified as a space saver/tempory spare and that's why you get the warning sticker.

In my mkII Fabia Greenline the "space saver" was actually 10mm wider than the tyres on the car as it was the standard spare. So yet again it had the sticker. :D

Or if directional, could be fitted the 'wrong' side. When I had my Fabia it was identical to the other tyres, and I ignored the 50mph limit.

A directional spare would be dangerous on the wrong side of the car so they had to put a non directional on. I'd take the sticker off and use as you would with an odd tyre on.

Cheers for the replys guys,no need to buy a steel wheel then I'll just rip the sticker off.

Thanks

I was sat in my local mot centre last month when a car failed its mot for having it's spare wheel on (with warning sticker). They told the owner the reason it had failed was the spare wheel was made of a weaker metal to reduce weight and so it's not to be used for long. It could be that he had a space saver style wheel and so it doesn't really apply but maybe safer to pop to the scrappies?! I picked up a new wheel and good tyre for £20 a few weeks ago.

my spare is 15" and is a directional type tyre. Fail :bandit:

Check the part number on the spare. I'll bet it's a standard steel.
