My Airbags--please explain

Featured Replies

For all of my airbags to go off together would I have to have a big crash ?

Or could I have a small crash costing say 400 quid to do a wing and then face a huge bill to sort out my airbags ?

How much do they cost to fix?

What do you do to sort out an airbag ?

Stuff it back in its box like a repacked parachute or scrap the thing ?

What happens to the trim over the airbags when they go off ?

If all 10 of my airbags on my Octavia went off together the flying trim would probably lacerate me to death anyway

Please can someone explain some of the details ?

Thanks

If you have a BIG crash and all 10 Airbags go off, the last thing you'll be worried about is refitting your airbags. Car would be written off, surely?

If the crash didn't get you the ten flying bits of plastic will, and if they fail the ten airbags will sufficate you. It will be like the scene in Demolition Man

:D:D:D

Simple rule don't have a crash ;)

I think there must be two sensors, one for frontal collisions triggering front and rear airbags and another for side impacts that would trigger the side/curtain airbags. If a car hits you three quarters on, then all would go off.

I think airbags are scrap once triggered. They split open trim when triggered so the trim is probably scrap too. Also remember the seat belt pre tensioners are fired too (and scrap)

It is very expensive to replace an airbag. 10 airbags, 5 pretensioners and a load of trim =

....and the noise of them all going off at once will leave you completely deaf.

yeah but just imagine the footage if you caught it on camera.

It makes me wonder why they dont make airbags red, to hide the blood from the lacerations ;-)

I don't know the price of airbags for the New Octavia but for my Octavia they are:

Driver's -

That said, you would normally need to be involved in a fairly major collision for them to go off.

i got my side airbag to go off when i had my roundabout incident, i bought eddyh's old seats off of him though :D

still, it cost me 2xnew wheels 2xnew tyres 2xshocks, new drivers seat

and yes, they are bloody loud!

How much damage was there to the seatback, bengie? Would it have needed replacing along with the airbag?

not on mine, the airbag splits the seam down the side where the back meets the front. possible to just replace the actual unit and get it sewn up. quite a common process so i've been told by my nice friendly mechanic, he does them himself!

don't forget mate if you have set an airbag off then none of your airbags will work as the system is de-activated and will need resetting with vag com or the vag tool(hopefully) sometimes it needs a new airbag ecu(i think its this anyway, mine didn't need replacing) though apparantly

Seriously now is this being deafened or cut to ribbons by flying trim a real possibility ?

Are there recorded instances ?

If the crash was massive and the bags save your life I suppose learning to lip read while the doctors do skin grafts on your missing parts is better than being dead.

But if a minor shunt in a car park or something sets of one or more and costs an arm or leg to put right and deafens you then this seems a bit over the top doesn't it ?

What severity of prang is needed to deafen yourself ? Anyone had experience of a slow speed accident.

I can visualise a car suffering minor repairable damage but being written off by the insurers because it would cost too much to replace all the airbags.

Needing two wheels tyres and suspension sounds quite a heavy crash to me.

Thanks for replies.

I passed a guy one day and it looked like his airbag had deployed (I didn't see any damage so dunno what happened), but boy did he look dazzled. I was sorry afterwards that I didn't stop to see if he was okay but by the time I realised what had happened there was a line of traffic behind me and everyone was getting in the way.

No' date=' it's rubbish. All trim that's affected by a deploying airbag will stay attached to the car. For instance:

The noise is fairly loud but not loud enough to cause hearing damage.

IIRC speaking to my dealer the airbags are only activated by a major impact force, he was telling me something that if you crash into a stationary object in 15-20 mph they would not go off. There are sensors on the front and sensors on each side of the car in the doors. For all the airbags to go off you would need a very complex crash, being hit on the front aswell as both sides of the car..

Btw, where do you get 10 airbags???...(driver front and chest, passenger front and chest + head curtains on both sides = 6 airbags)

I have to say, I'm not really worried about flying trim (as there isn't any) deafness (which would be temporary) or burns (which do happen, but are superficial), if my airbags mean that I've got a face and a set of limbs after a prang.

Only the relevant airbag should trigger in an accident (if you read the owner's manual) and the force required to trigger one means that there'll be a lot of damage anyway.

Phil

i hit a roundabout at about 65mph ish, it was a small angled kerb basically that the car bounced over, it was loud but not deafening just pant filling loud

Well I'm working on the basis that if a bit of trim has "Airbag" written on it then there is an airbag behind it. HopeImRight.

So that is

Centre of steering wheel

Infront of passenger in the dash

Side of both front seats

And 6 roof pillars

That makes 10 to me.

I've just been outside and checked again. Yep definitely 10 places

However I'm quite happy to be told politely how I'm wrong. After all fewer airbags equals less deaf.

it was loud but not deafening just pant filling loud

Didnt mean to worry you about deafness btw! Wasn't really being serious! :o

Can you imagine the lawsuits in america if airbags going off made you deaf  All the car makers would be broke by now, but yes they are loud, but then so would the impact noise. A bit of ringing in the old ears for an hour is better than needing the steering wheel surgically removed from your head!
