Best (easiest) way to sell a private plate

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I bought my vRS which already had a private plate on it.....it means nothing to me, and I would rather have the original or year specific plate back on her; I've had a bit of interest in the plate just from passing motorists and have checked out the net re. selling/transferring plates but it's a tad confusing. Is it easier (and cheaper for me) just to keep the plate on my car until I find a buyer, or would it be more straight forward to put it on retention til it is sold? I notice if transferred to another vehicle then both v5's etc have to be sent off....is it a case of the prospective buyer sending their docs direct to DVLA or to me first so they would go in together? NO experience of this whatsover, but selling the plate is going to help toward (or pay for hopefully lol) a new turbo!!

Put it on retention, it will make with whole process easier when you sell the plate.

Cool, Thanks for the info

Retention is now up to £105 a year , not the £35 it was. (then £130 if its 2 years retention)

Then the transfer fees.

You can still buy a number from the DVLA that might mean something to you for £255 including all the fees and you can retain that for a year before puting on a vehicle.

Check out the Gov.Direct site on the rules and the prices now of Transfers.

Become a PITA IMO & easier to just buy a £255 number from the DVLA.

Or if the £105 & £80, also your fee to get back your number or age related, & getting plates made is all covered

plus some profit on the sale, its worth it probably.

(your insurance company will probably not charge to change your number, but if they do, count that in,

The DVLA change your reg number on the MOT at no charge other than the transfer or re-registration application.

Just had to check what PITA meant hehe, I have been offered £600 for the plate, every scenario sounds like a PITA to me!!!

I would take that £600 and leave the buyer the cost or transfer etc.

No need to do 'retention' if you have that buyer.

Just get the vehicles original plate re issued or an age related plate from the DVLA

or

£255 gets you a number from the DVLA site & a set of plates £15, happy days.

£330 or around £500 in the hipper, the choice is yours.

If the offer of £600 is from an agent then beware.

People even offer for sale numbers that they have no right to.
