Dual mass flywheel swap for single?

Featured Replies

I have currently run into the rather expensive snag of my dual mass flywheel on the way out. Got a quote of £600 to change with new clutch and i was wondering to make it cheaper can a single solid flywheel be fitted in a straight swap or does it require any mods to the gearbox.

Advice would be appreciated rather alot as could poss save me a few bob :D

Cheers Briskodians :)

Glyn, I've got a single mass flywheel clutch assembly surplus to requirements in my garage (see "car parts for sale" on this site).

Yes, it is a direct replacement from a DMF to SMF provided you change the whole kit which includes Flywheel + Clutch components. No modifications required on the Gearbox.

I got mine at a very reasonable price while it was on discount from 'techniclutch' on eBay.

Cheers fellas :-)

Also is there actually any difference in gearbox performance from running a smf to a dmf?

Just had mine done on Tuesday, and although I have only done around 100 miles, it seems smoother, particularly pulling away, and managed some pretty seamless gear changing today, really smooth. There may be a little more noise, but certainly not as noisy, or worrying as a DMF on the way out.

Mines totally quiet too after 16k of having it converted.

Cheers for the gen :-)

1.) The Turbo Lag has reduced slightly, with the car picking up at lower rev levels now and giving a sense of straight linear acceleration

2.) There is a slight "clatter" while in Neutral, other than that, the noise/sound is comparable to the stock setup, in other words, no difference

Yes, it is smoother all round to driver on a SMF. Both my Octavia 1.9s have been SMF converted following DMF failures at stupidly low mileages, and I wouldn't dream of having another DMF replaced like for like. Any future cars I own which have DMF failure WILL be SMF converted.

Andyoctavia, if your recent conversion has any noise whatsoever, take it back. From my experience of SMF conversions, the stories of them being noisy are totally unfounded. My 54 plate Octy is now on 15000 miles since its conversion, and the 08 plate is on 6000, and both a re absolutely silent. Talk to Skippy41 on here, his 55 plate Octavia taxi is now pushing 200k miles, with way over 100k of these on a SMF conversion, and even that is quiet.

Had a new set of boots fitted today, and the car seems very quiet indeed, so it may have been a lot of tyre noise, which the old DMF was hiding. The car now seems very smooth and quiet, and unfortunately I will have to hand it over to the missus on Tuesday, as it is going to be her "ride".
