Upgrade to Digital Radio and Bluetooth but keeping the oem look?

Featured Replies

I have a 61 plate Fabia with the Swing stereo. I have a Parrot MKi9100 Bluetooth kit and a Sonichi S1000 DAB in the glovebox. I also have the plain plastic steering wheel and basic computer: ie. no MaxiDot or MFSW

I'd love to do away with both of the add on units but still have these features. The Parrot is OK but the DAB is not very practical and I loose the FM signal from it to pirate radio stations/lorries etc.

The majority of aftermarket units are very obvious -I want something that I can just leave in the car on display and not worry too much about theft. I really don't want to be faffing around with fascias and wires.

I'm thinking about one of the new Amundsen+ DAB units or possibly a second hand VW stereo from eBay, but would it do what I want and what sort of aerial system modifications would I need for the DAB?

Alternatively there'd be something like one of the Zenec units and the fact that I could get digital radio via DVB-T (freeview)

I really like the sound quality of the Swing stereo as it has strong midrange and reasonable low end clarity -my hearing is a bit damaged from working with loud machinery and going to stupid loud music venues when I was teenager -so my concerns are quality over quantity.

I wouldn't mind changing my steering wheel -the leather multifunction ones are a lot nicer but how many more bits would I be looking at changing and how much is it liable to cost?

If you get a response I'd Also love to know as I'm preparing for the arrival of my Non dab Skoda

Unfortunately I didn't get any help with this. I did go ahead and bought a VW RCD 310 DAB from eBay as detailed in this thread. I have kept the Parrot -Investing in a new steering wheel, the Bluetooth unit and the coding required made it an overly expensive proposition, plus the limited connection options of the the VW Bluetooth system didn't appeal

I put an RCD510DAB into my Octavia II and then fitted a Fiscon Basic Plus. The whole exercise cost somewhere in the region of £800 which, and make no bones about it, is a lot of dollar. I could have saved myself a couple of hundred quid on the Fiscon if I had sourced and fitted it myself as I would have shopped around and not paid full retail. If you have Maxidot, you could use the Fiscon Basic in conjunction with an RCD310DAB (available for about £80 secondhand) - shopping around you ought to be able to do the whole thing for under £400 including the DAB aerial. Mine was a frankly ludicrous £90 but that got me a Calearo antenna which is IDENTICAL to the OE aerial (which is made by Calearo) on the Octavia. The DAB won't work properly without a proper DAB aerial input.

My setup cost me £165 all in for the RCD310DAB and the aerial -I fitted it all myself.

If memory serves I paid just under £200 for the Parrot MKI9100 including fitting. I really should have done it myself as now I realize what an straight forwards job it is.

I paid £80 for an RCD310DAB for the wifes car and I know I can get a £30 DAB aerial. My last parrot only cost me £40 so it's possible to do it on the cheap. I wanted everything integrated so I was prepared to spend on mine.
