Bonnet strut?

Featured Replies

Had the Yeti for a little over a week and I'm already thinking of very small minor mods!

Having come from a VW Golf R32 I'm used to popping the bonnet open and the gas strut/s lifting and supporting the bonnet. Feels very old fashioned having to support the bonnet while positioning the supporting arm! ;)

Anyway, has anyone thought about fitting a gas strut or two? I've found one here - http://milotec.de/index.php?cat=c352_Exterior-equipment.html&XTCsid=365dd578cd5900ee54cec689c754388c - but has anyone has bought from these folk before, or have you come up with your own ingenious idea?

Jeff

Looks very like the one I got from superskoda-not difficult to fit and great in operation.

Another quick question for JCP...once the strut is fitted is it strong enough to open the bonnet slowly and smoothly, and likewise when closing it doesn't just drop suddenly when it reaches a certain point?

Jeff

I find it fine, quite powerful in fact they recommend you keep a hand on it when opening and you need to use some force to overcome it when closing.

Best be careful not to bend the bonnet when closing it; a similar upgrade on another car I had led to a few unwanted creases.

Hi,

Superskoda.com no longer list this kit.  Does anyone know where else you can buy them?  I've e-mailed Milotec several times to check their shipping costs but have had no reply yet, so was looking for alternatives.

Simon

Checked and SkodaDop don't list one.

You could ask these people? They list Yeti Tailgate struts,  they may well be able to supply bonnet struts too....

They do most lengths and pressure of struts but I doubt they would do the fixings needed to fit them to a Yeti.

got mine from skodadop last week

i check

Hi,

Have tried SGS Engineering; they don't list a bonnet strut / kit and have not bothered to respond to an email providing details of the SuperSkoda item, so I guess they can't help.  (Would be nice if people replied though).

Feebs - how much did the Skodadop kit cost you in total with postage?

Simon

I fitted one from SuperSkoda .I did have to enlarge one of the fixing holes. The bonnet does flex a bit when closing.

Which is to be expected when you are fitting one to a place that isn't designed for it, and exactly why I wouldn't fit one.

It would be better to fit a pair of slightly weaker gas struts which would reduce the strain on the bonnet. I hadn't realised that the kit only consisted of one strut. All the cars I've had previously that had bonnet struts always had a pair....

There appear to be some double strut kits available from Russia on eBay - at least, the picture shows two struts installed,  and two in the box,  but the text talks about "strut" in the singular, so a bit of checking up needed. Also a bit pricey once you've added the shipping costs,  but might be worth a look.  EDIT: I've looked again and theres a video showing the installation of two struts, so kit obviously includes both.
