rear brake noise after handbrake released

Featured Replies

When my S reg felicia moves off rear brakes make a grinding noise. This is always after it's been parked up for awhile with hand brake on. The noise goes away when I've moved off and braked a few times. It's been doing it for bout 100 miles or so now. Do I need to get brakes checked at garage? Seems to brake in straight line fine like it always does.

If it's just after it's been parked up for a while, then I'd expect that the drum will have some surface rust on the brake surface but this should wear off soon and then it shouldn't happen.

I had a problem with one of my rear brake drums which similar symptoms and found that the brake show retainers had rusted away and those and the springs were slowly being ground away between the drum and shoes.

I'd pull the drum off and have a look.

do yourself a favor and check the handbrake cables first ASAP.

have a lot of WD-40 handy, because I had a similar problem that ended up with a locked back wheel and I couldn't move the car..

some anti-seize copper compound on those points where shoes are rubbing the base plate wil help a lot too.
