What needs changing regularly?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I'm just going through making a list so I can remember, what needs changing regularly at intervals to keep the car running at it's best?

I have a Seat Leon 1.6TDI CR Ecomotive and the only things I can think of are:

Cambelt - Every 4 years or 120,000miles (according to my book)

Brake Fluid - Every 2 years

Air Con Service - Every 2 years

Engine Coolant - Every 2 years

Brake Pads/Discs and Tyres - As required

Gearbox Oil - 100,000 miles

Oil, Oil Filter, Pollen Filter - Every Service (based on 10k miles servicing)

Air Filter, Fuel Filter - Every other service (based on 10k mile servicing, if I change to variable servicing I'll do this every service)

Anything I have missed, or you guys would recommend changing?

Thanks

Coolant every 2 years may be excessive with long life G12 coolant - Its not expensive to replace though.

Air Con evry 2 years may be excesive also

Tyres - replace as required.

Perhaps check the geometry every few years.

IIRC Gearbox oil, G12++ Coolant and Fuel Filter are "Lifetime" parts.

I agree you should probably do them all every few years like, as there is no such thing as a "lifetime" - however i wouldn't think the fuel filter needs doing every other year.

Pollen filter should be good for two years id have thought also

120000 miles?!?!?

That's surely madness for a cambelt change :o

Should that be 120k kilometres. I have always read it was every 60k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first. At the same time it is recommended you the water pump, so you could change the coolant at the same time, (or just top it up).

Fuel filters can get blocked so I would not call this a 'Lifetime' part, I'd change it as you say every other service.

Sorry, didn't even realise that everyone had replied to this thread. :D

No, the Cambelt is 120,000 miles or 4 years, or whatever comes first. I believe this is the same on the 2.0CR as well. Something about them using stronger belts from europe, or something along those lines.

As for the fuel filter, they say they change them every time on their 20k service, however, I've since spoken to a couple of dealers who said that they just do them every 40k, so that Seat 'It's fixed' document is a load of bull, as dealers don't even follow them. That's why I don't trust other people with my car!

I've since spoken to a couple of independent VAG garages (Volksmaster in Oldham being one) and EstateMan on here, they all seemed in agreement that the max you should do on a CR engine fuel filter is about 30k. The CR engines are much more dependent on fuel pressure, meaning their fuel filters are more sparse. That makes them clog up slightly easier, and more prone to collapsing.

To be honest, for a tenner, I don't mind changing the fuel filter to be on the safe side. (I'll be servicing myself when out of warranty)

As for the coolant, every time I change the Cambelt, I'll probably do the coolant pump as well (as that's what everyone seems to do), and they have to flush the coolant on a change anyway. I believe the coolant is rated for 4 years, so every cambelt change would be ideal.

Gearbox oil, I've since found out doesn't need to be changed, but I might notice a difference from renewing it every 100k or so.

My indy refuses to do a cambelt unless you agree to do the pump at the same time because they know of how often pumps die causing all sorts of problems, and for the sake of a 40 quid part it's a false economy not to do it whilst the belts being done.

As for 120k miles... I'd personally never run it to that point. The Fabia MPI with a timing CHAIN recommends changing it at 120k miles, i'd certainly not trust a belt for anywhere near that amount of time, unless the belt you were swapping for provided a warranty - but even then if the belt went, the manufacturer would probably be reluctant to cover you via warranty/guarantee and would argue that 'you installed it wrong'...
