BKR7EIX or BKR8EIX spark plugs?

Featured Replies

My stock plugs were ruined after 5k, the BKR7's and 8s ive had only lasted bout 5k as well.

I would personally say you dont need a set of 8's in youyr car.  the only reason I had them was because my car ran higher boost

  • You're doing track days in a vRS without a RARB Jabo?? That's almost like playing professional football barefoot I'd say  :p

Has anybody taken photos of 7's and 8's from the same car? Would be nice to have a comparison.

Bump for 'tattyjay'

Thanks you beat me to having to search for it! I remember reading this now.

What is the best then, as my car is having a full decat system then of to be custom mapped.

Suggest at least a cooler plug as the remap will create an increase in temperature. Like said before have a word with the remapping company and take the plugs with you to install. If I remember correctly you have the coil removal tool anyway.

yeah I brought the tool just i case I went down this root. Also I asked him about the itg induction kit and his reply was that they don't really do a lot when only increase the bhp about 30-40bhp. The standard is good as it is. You only need one when you in a high power car like a evo and going to 400bhp plus.

?

Can i ask who you are talking about,  is it Some Professional Tuner with experience of Remapping and Tuning the likes

of a 1.4 TSI Twincharger?

& Is this who is going to be doing your Custom Map?

The tuner who did mine said he wouldn't do anymore to the engine. Are you going have a rolling road done before and after? I'm assuming the before will be with the new exhaust so be interesting to find out the increase from that alone.

I guess if the remap company says that the standard plugs are ok then you may have to decide if they know enough about the engine when others are saying it needs a cooler plug. Worth testing the water with them.

You need to go one heat range colder for each 75-100bhp added according to NGK's website. So if standard NGK plug is 7 you will need to go to 8 if you add between 75-100bhp

Ickle issue.

VW might just have got the Standard Plugs a bit wrong, & then also the Engine Management.

So some uprated Spark Plugs might well be in order standard.

Does anyone fancy getting in touch with Skoda UK Customer Services, Maybe John Good, Tom Chadwick or some Manager

can ask the 'Technical Department' if they have any 'Latest Advice' on Spark Plugs for Standard CAVE & CTHE from

recent Experience & Warranty Claims, and is there any advice on the Service Schedule or is it still 40,000 miles

for changing Spark Plugs. ?

Sorry I've gone abit of topic here, I was saying about the itg aswell.

I'm waiting to put in the 7 or 8 as I thought the standard ones was a lower rating standard.

I can give an answer or opinion, and maybe Jabozuma can & others can,

but it is you that needs to decide if either or any answer is good or correct.

Best ask the Person Tuning the Car for you, remapping or De-cating etc, and if their opinion and experience is suspect,

then its you choice what you do.

You want the car running well for the road in all weathers and track in warm weather i take it?

Buy two sets, try them out, take good photos of the plugs to show us and show them to your tuner as well. If he's worth his salt just by looking at the plugs he will be able to tell straight away which ones are better.

You will also be able to feel it yourself to some extent.

I can not search just now.

What plugs is 'newbie69' running with after the remap done in Greece?

Was he running 250 ponies?

Where is the best place to buy the plugs from?

Hi Guys, just out of interest, what plug gap are you running??

I bought from fleebay. Gap is factory pre-set but doesn't hurt checking. Should be 0.7-0.75mm

EDIT: Mind you, gapping sparks is a bit of a black art and depends on what you are running. Highly tuned high boost motor might need smaller gaps (and stronger coil packs) to keep it sweet at high revs and standard motor in a warm climate might have the gaps widened to increase the mpgs when redline is never entertained.

Yes, very much a black art. I use to own a Toyota Soarer TT with the 1JZ GTE engine. Twin Turbo 2500. Most of the Soarer guys, and myself, only used standard NGK plugs, set around .65mm. Maybe less with more than standard boost as the spark could be blown out. The standard plug was supposed to be platinum at 1.1mm.  I used to change the oil and filter at 5000kms and throw the plugs out and replace. Standard plugs are cheap enough to do that. I might also add that I got the car when it was 12 years old and had it for about 5 years. It never used a drop of oil and hardly blackened the oil either. It went like the wind as well. These engines were capable of 500hp without even changing the head gasket. Too bad VAG don't learn from other manufacturers.

I still think my vrs is an animal.....

I always loved Soarer, there was something special about that car!

VAG has a culture of squeezing money out of stone and placating Euro emissions laws at all costs and Toyota has a culture of offering the best product at the lowest price they can and it makes all the difference...

Plug gap in theory should be as big as possible as this creates the largest initial flame front leading to the most complete combustion. The problem is that the higher RPM the lower the spark energy (the same system has to produce many more spark events in the same amount of time from the same overall energy capacity) and a big gap is simply too big... So you either make the gap smaller or uprate your ignition system :)

When you factor in oil in the combustion chamber and plugs fouling with oil varnish or ash, too rich running (using fuel to cool the combustion chamber) then you have a bit of a problem...

My pet hate is the exhaust headers. I think the primitive log type headers with unequal exhaust paths between 1,4 & 2,3 create different combustion conditions due to unequal scavenging  etc. with which ECU is not able to deal with so the cylinders either run too rich or too lean leading to failure. Plenty of plug photos I've seen (and my own plugs) are the best proof.

I've gone and ordered the 8s today from camskills was £30 delivered not bad to be fair was £40 at a local motor factors near me.

Ant

Sorry just spotted the question. I am running the 7s, now gapped at 0,60. I think the 8s, in cars around our power (230-250 bhp) were give giving some misfires from cold and are better for 250+ iirc. But Ant, you're getting your remap done soon right?

I think 8's will be step too far. With 7's seeing lower engine temperatures, not going over mid 90's and a reduction in mpg.

yeah the car is going in just over 2 weeks, as the company has moved places.
