Advice: a new Octy VRS Vs a 2nd hand one?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just looking for a bit of advice on this. I've ordered a new Octy VRS TFSI in Race blue (Sunroof, rear parking sense, maxidot, heated seats, spare wheel, dark alcantara) for £18K

But today I saw a private sale one, 2010 '59' plate with 43K on the clock (DSG, Race Blue, Maxidot) this is being sold by a neighbour and has just under 1 year of warrantee left.

I dont know him so it may turn out to be a no go but if the car is straight, does this sound like a good deal?

I'm guessing I'd lose my £500 deposit on the new one? (ordered 2 weeks ago with a 16 week wait)

Cheers

Ron

Its covered some high mileage in a short space of time but if most of that was motorway miles then it wouldnt be a concern to me as long as the servicing is up to date.

Buying new(ish) but 2nd hand and with still at least 1 years warrenty is a good option and one I would always opt for (unless money was no object). Obviously theres pro's and cons to new v used.

Pro's:

Any problems have either been dealt with or are known and can be dealt with and the deal reflects this.

A "young" car means you still have the Skoda warrenty

You dont take the massive hit on depreciation

Cons:

Its not new and you dont get the whole new car experience

It wont have the extra warrenty period

You dont get to haggle with the dealer for the best deal

You dont get the exact specification you want

It's a no brainer as far as finacial factors are concerned but as we all know you cant under estimate the heart factor.

It wont hurt to go and check it out. You have nothing to lose.

I think the new ones are too dear for an 8 year old car, check out the used one CONDITION is everything

Cheers Mark, I did start looking for a 2nd hand one originally but couldnt find a good one that was even the right colour so this is part of the way there ;)

I do love the idea of a new one but my concern is the value and depreciation. I only really use my car for 4-5K a year and I'll lose some big money for the privelidge of driving 15K over 3 years.

The spec is the main issue for me, never tried DSG before

Ron

I'd go for the used one, you can extend the warranty with Skoda for £300 a year to cover any issues and as for the DSG I have it on my new S4 and I love it - it's the first auto that I have owned and was a concern for me when I initially ordered it.

Let me know if you need a boot liner as I know a man who's selling one!

DSG you either love it or hate it, a mate has it and loves it , I abhor it! Some on here like the novelty for six months and then revert to manual, it is an expensive option new.

Does the £11K price tag sound good/bad etc? I know nothing about the value of DSG cars

I think as long as it is in good nick, it could be a good option.....although I was really looking forward to having a sunroof ;)

On that basis (which is exactley how I would approach it) it's even more of a no brainer to me.

Over the next 3 years at only 4-5k a year it will bring it line with the average mileage figures for the same year car, So it's a win win for you. You save the massive depreciation hit and you retain the value in a few years time when the mileage is back in line with cars of the same year.

The big saving now is because of the higher than average mileage and the depreciation.

Having said all that go over it and check every detail (I know you will anyway). If its in good or better than good condition I would seriously consider it.

Ive not tried a DSG yet but I will defo take one on an extended test drive as I hear very gooed things about them.

I wouldn't buy new again. Depreciation is just too heavy.

A 2yr old in good nick is a better deal.

Yeah the depreciation takes the edge off the new car feel a bit. Although the VAT deal means I'm saving about £4K on the cars list price anyway.

Plus if I cancel the new car, I'll get stung £500 for my deposit.

Well i went to see it, everything seems to be as you would expect for the age/mileage. Interior is mint, exterior is good but bonet has stone chips as the car has traveled from Newcastle to Leeds everyweek for 2 years. All of the 42K is pretty much that journey.

It's a bit sparse on options, its a DSG and so had MFSW and Maxidot, it has Race blue paint and a nice Parrot Blue Tooth kit installed.

All the wheels are unmarked and tires are decent with even tread, the service history is all there, full skoda, 2 keys, still has 12,000 to next service and 8 months warrantee left, also just did a HPI and was all clear.......

nice one! now you can add some the bits you want with the extra cash youve saved

Yeah, already have a turbo back exhaust on order and will be getting it mapped ASAP ;)

200 mile daily commute in a petrol vRS, no wonder he's keen to get rid!

I think he's only been doing the return drive once a week but yes......ouch that will have been expensive! ;)

I hope the price is good, I feel like I have lept on it a little quicker than i would as it seems like a good deal have scoured autotrader and Piston heads.

I have a mate who does about the same, and some days more. and has just ordered another Petrol VRS, i said about a Diesel, but he doesn't like them, and he normally gets 35mpg. oh and the last one was 'mapped.

good deal!

Car bras are hateful things I would rather have stone chips than driving round looking like a **** . If the chips bother you so much a sprayed bonnet would be around £130. If people are so scared of chips ger it wrapped clear

I got a MASSIVE chip on my bonnet at 69 miles.....on the drive back from picking it up brand new. I could have cried.

At the end of the day it can be sprayed but Octy's tend to pick up road rash more than most.....Like my front bumper which has picked up yet another chip since being sprayed under warranty a couple of months back :(

I got one in the Drive home ( 5 miles) new from the garage :@ The dealer had a guy come out and touch up ( which was nice, in a fast show voice

The roads are cr@p nowadays..... The fast show....brings back memories! 'Touching up stone chips is like making love to a beautiful woman....'

Agree with this. You have done very, very well. A huge amount of car for the money.

I went new & love having my preferred spec, but won't go new again due to the depreciation.

I hope you get on with the DSG. I love it. Relaxing when you're in traffic or cruising, lightening quick when you're pressing on, either in Sport or using the paddles.

The DSG was surprisingly intuitive, at first I was all over the shop, flicking my windscreen wipers and headlamps instead of the padels :) but in manual mode the gear shift is very quick indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if it is faster than most peeps can manually shift.

The auto mode was just as you'd expect, although I did notice some pause on kick down. A half a second delay before it kicks off?

Not every time and not there in manual mode.

The MFSW is really nice, that partially sold me!

Should be picking it up Fri/Sat so will get some pics posted
