Oops! Wing mirror prang... Replace or repair?

Featured Replies

Following a stupid decision on my behalf, I now have some rather serious scrapes in the NS wing mirror cover / cap that either need filling and spraying or simply replacing. The actual body and electronics appear to be undamaged - it's just cosmetic!

Fortunately the wing mirror folded and the indicator plastic was not damaged (other than a very minor scrape).

1) How do you remove the wing mirror cap (pre-FL)?

2) What's the part number for just the cap / cover (unprimed)?

3) Does anyone have any recommendations for spray paint and lacquer (paint code 9102) that they have found to work?

Many thanks for any advice.

Alternatively, has any one had the same issue and had it repaired? If so, roughly how much did it cost?

Thanks.

You need to remove the glass to get to the screws, use trim removal tools

Thanks. Presume the glass is 'stuck' on to some backing as I cannot see any visible fittings?

I think I have the right part numbers for the wing mirrors of pre-FL Octavias (that answers questions 2 above):

Mirror Cap:

N/S - 1Z0 857 537 A GRU (primed) £28.98

O/S - 1Z0 857 538 A GRU (primed) £28.98

Mirror indicator:

N/S - 1Z0 949 101 C £22.82

O/S - 1Z0 949 102 C £22.82

I can't guarantee that these are correct, but an afternoon of searching the net and it seems to be correct.

Now to source some paint. Any suggestions as to what is best to use?

Spray cans from the dealer are spot on and spray perfectly. If yours is metallic it also comes with clear laquer.

All I can find from the dealers are 'Touch up' sets for fixing stone chips. These do have a lacquer and a paint - but are they spray cans inside the boxes?

Wing mirror glass is easy to remove, if you have thin fingers then you can reach behind and feel the mounting. Gently prise the mirror in the area of the mount and it should pop off (its clipped on), then simply disconnect the wiring for the heater and remove.

Thanks Mannyo and bluevrs2. I'll take a look at the weekend and, if I have positive success, I'll get a cap and paint on order.

bluevrs2 you are a star!

Thanks for the help everyone.

With questions 1, 2 & 3 answered, I'll be ordering the parts pretty soon.

For future info, if you talk to TPS, you can buy them pre-painted, which would take a rather major expense out of it.

It's not too late - I'll make some enquiries.

Thanks.
