Boot lid strut replacement

Featured Replies

My boot lid struts no longer support the boot lid. It looks like an easy job to replace them (as long I remember to prop the lid open first). Can anyone confirm this?

I've done this job on my own with no major issues. I'd advise you swap both out however you may notice only one has failed.

IIRC there are two bolts at one end and a pin clip at the other. You need to move the clip back in order to "pop" the strut off the ball joint. Simple enough :)

Thanks Wilsonian. I have just ordered them from theskodashop. It will be good to get this loose boot lid off my back.

I've heard that there are golf ones that when accompanied with spring grommets enable the boot to self open when you activate it via fob! Pretty cool mod I want to look into when I have some time.

Hmm. What's best: the boot lid slamning on my back, or the boot lid jumping up and knocking my teeth out? Only one way to find out .....

Managed to dig up this link from a Golf GTi forum:-

They actually use Fabia Boot Struts but different bumps from a Scirocco are used (2 x 1K8 827 761 C (1K8827761C) – Scirocco bumpers).

Although I can't see how the new bumps would cause the boot to automatically open by itself?

If anyone ever needs a pair I can get a couple at a good price as they are obtained in bulk quantities for the fabia bonnet lifter kits. :)

A pm with the details of the fabia bonnet lifting kit would be greatly appreciated.

Be careful when replacing the struts, they can be fitted the wrong way round (the triangular top bracket, not left and right side of car).If fitted wrong the boot lid will not stay in the fully open position,on its own.

I left the fittings as they were and just popped the new struts on. It's a neat design and a very simple job - slide the retaining clip towards the end with a screwdriver and pull the strut off.
