Checking this oil will be ok... Fuchs Titan in vRS

Featured Replies

Hi chaps,

My 06 plate petrol vRS on 115k is due some fresh oil, and I have a few spare bottles of this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-68897-fuchs-titan-race-pro-s-5w-40-ester-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

I understand the 'official' oil is 5w-30, but I have read the 40 should be ok, especially given that the car has a stage 1 map and spends a lot of it's miles towing.

However, I don't understand the VW505, 507 etc specs. What do these mean exactly? Or is that oil going to be fine and I should just get on with it?

Thanks in advance!

Adam

To keep it short mate that oil is no good, to meet VW spec any fully synthetic 5W/30 or 5W/40 (depending on the service plan) oil may be used aslong as it has been classified 'C3' by ACEA. That oil has been classified 'B3' I wouldnt use it.

Thanks for the info mate. I hadn't realised oils were classified C3, B3, A1, etc. Looking into it, this seems to be a useful page: http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/oils.htm

So, next question. I have some other oil that meets VW 505 spec, and it's listed as API SN/CF, ACEA A3, B3, B4. The Fuchs is API SJ, SL, CF, ACEA A3, B3. So, despite the Fuchs having a slightly higher API spec (I think?), it basically means that the other oil I have has just been sent to VW for approval, but the Fuchs hasn't, so can't carry the VW recommendation. Is that correct?

Also, did you mean the Fuchs oil is 'no good' for the application I asked about, or 'no good' full stop?

I can see now I need a C3-04 spec oil because of the high performance nature of the engine, and it having a catalyst.

Cheers again!

I'm running the Millers CFS 5W40 in mine but I was very tempted by the current Opie oils offer on this oil. If you want to sell it cheap let me know ;)

Cheers Mike! I just like to look into these sorts of things in more detail, and understand the reasons for any certification rather than just buying because of the label :)

Martin - I'll let you know on that one. Have other vehicles I can use it in but got 4 bottles and can only foresee a use for 2 of them at the moment... Got some of the Millers in another vehicle and it comes highly recommended from the chap who built the car (and is very much 'in the know').

Cheers guys. I'm not too fussed about brands, just whatever meets the correct spec.

Have bitten the bullet and bought more oil, frustrating to have 30l lying around and none of it will do, but the 25% 'brisk25' discount at Euro Car Parts helps soften the blow :)

Thanks again!
