Water Leak Around Turbo

Featured Replies

Need a bit of advice here. I have been told that I have a water leak (coolant) around my turbo housing. My local dealer say that it is water cooled, I thought it was oil but what do I know.

I am assuming from what they have said that the whole turbo will need to be taken to bits to find out where leak is coming from.

Firstly it is only leaking marginally and secondly will the whole turbo need to be stripped down? My dealer say that they have never taken a turbo to bits before so seem reluctant to do it and besides whilst they are excellent with the service they have given me so far, I would prefer in this instance to take it somewhere that has done this before.

Does anyone know how much it will cost to do as currently the car is giving me more problems than I know how to deal with  . I could list the other problems but I may be here a few days, hence having been a bit quiet of late. Delcac will know what I mean!!

Any help would be more than appreciated, as I am trying to keep costs down at the mo after just having bought a house.

What engine have you got? I had a look in your profile but that isn't much help.

Andre has a 1.8T octy vRS.

Thanks.

The turbo has a coolant supply and an oil supply. First off you need it inspecting properly on the car to see where it's leaking from. I could be as simple as a corroded washer on the coolant line. Has the turbo ever been removed before?

If it is the washer then the turbo needs dropping from the manifold for replacement which can take 2-3hrs you'll also need to replace the gaskets. If the turbo is at fault just replace it as well as all the gaskets and washers

Eddy,

Thanks, my local dealer did not seem to know what the exact location of the leak is, somwhere round the back of the turbo they think but were not sure exactly where.

It seems to be a very small leak maybe even sweating. Is this something I should worry about much or do I need to get it booked it pronto?

I guess it will be an expensive job to repair... :thumbdwn:

Not 'too' expensive if you use an independant rather than main dealer, if the turbo is ok then you are probably looking at around

I had a couple of pipes in that area replaced under warranty, I know that doesn't help but my dealer said it wasn't uncommon.

Thinking back it may have been a recall item

Just a thought but have you replaced the TIP? There is a coolant line that runs very close to there. It's one of the factors that makes the TIP install so fiddly.

Twas done a long time ago on his car, Eddy ;)

Just checked, mine was a cooloant pipe at the front of the engine, twas weeping, they thought turbo but it just happened to be that that was where it had run to before dropping. I'm still convinced that it was either a warranty job or that it was a recall item, either way I didn't pay for it :D

Hi Jon,

Am just out of waranty now :thumbdwn:

I live in Stratford Upon Avon area, anyone know someone they can recommend?

I know Rainworth are v good in Mansfield as have had the car there before but it's a hell of a drive!

I'd personally recommend JBS in Chesterfield but they're about as far as Rainworths.

I think Stealth Racing may be near you, they have a pretty good rep.

I'm just up the road in Redditch... Sadly I normally go to Awesome or AMD - so that's not much help. The Skoda dealer in Alcester is very good, and have looked after mine well, and I've heard of a perfomance car specialist in Bromsgrove, which has a rolling road etc... I've heard good things about them but have never used them.

If I find out their name I'll post it - they may be able to give you a good quote for your turbo work.

Edit: they're in Stoke Prior, between Bromsgrove and Hanbury.

Andre,

If it's the turbo isn't it still under warranty, as Mike.

If you are only just out of warranty it might be worth a nice friendly call to customer services. They may well contibute something to the repair.
