Cruise Control / Down Hill

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a 2011 Octavia Elegance manual diesel and when I have the cruise control on it sticks with the speed on the level and uphill but, when I travel down hill it tends to override the cruise control and picks up speed. Any ideas please.

Perfectly normal. It only controls the throttle - not the brakes or gears. As diesels control fueling and not air intake, there is little engine breaking.

Thanks Briskodian, I used to deliver all make prestiege cars and I am sure they used to slow down and keep the set speed or was I imagining it.

Do some do this?

If it is an automatic, then it can change gear to maintain speed.

A petrol engine has loads of engine breaking. It would take a very steep hill to overcome this.

Cars with advanced braking control, such as Mercs, will apply the brakes.

There is loads of engine braking in a diesel car due to the higher compression used to ignite the fuel, going downhill however the engine braking will control the cars speed up until the point at which the gravity effect exceeds the effect of the engine braking, i.e. steeper hill. No problem at all, all cars will do this to some extent.
