Vrs boost issue, maybe.

Featured Replies

Hi, sorry if this has been covered before i did have a lookie but couldn't see anything. I haven't owned the Fabia long (about 3 months) and since I've owned it its always made a wooshing sound (like blowing over a bottle top) when its boosting about 2000-2500 rpm. Originally i thought it was a boost leak or intercooler problem but was told i would know if there was a leak as performance would be poor and fuel consumption would be high. Having never owned a TDI before I thought maybe thats just the way it was.

I recently purchased a boost gauge (I've always wanted one) and when fitted i noticed that it was boosting way up to 2bar before settling to about 1.35bar which I've been told is normal boost pressure. This corresponds with the wooshing noise sounds like the BOV is trying to relieve the 2bar?? Is it supposed to do this or could there be a vacum problem? Am I right in saying the little black vacum box on drivers side in engine bay monitors boost pressure?

Thanks in advance,

Lloyd.

sounds like there could be a small leak in one of the hoses on boost. It also sounds like the turbo is over boosting if its hitting 2bar....... 1.3bar is about standard boost pressure and 1.6-1.7 is around remap territory.

Okay thanks mate would this be noticeable by oil leaking from the joins in the boost pipes? Yeah thats what i thought, how would i solve an overboost problem? What regulates the boost pressure?

Cheers mate.

The joins all seem to leak a little oil imo, so it's more likely the leak is a damaged hose or needs new seals on the joins. Over boost is usually down to sticking vanes on the turbo but would put it into limp mode so I'd say it's possible the car is mapped. You can find out if it is by using vcds and running some live logs.

Okay thanks ill have a look for damage to the boost pipes. Yeah would you get an engine management light if it was in limp mode? I did wounder wether it was mapped. So i would just run the car with vcds hooked up and it could tell me if it was mapped??

Depends on the eml and limp mode mate, mine used to over boost and the eml didn't come on but went into limp mode. Ended up being sticking vanes in the turbo. As for vcds, yes you can take live logs with it plugged in but I'm not 100% on which bit you use. I think you can find the info in the vcds part of the forum somewhere.

I see, so how much work is if to un-stick sticky vanes, is it like engine out turbo off and a good clean or can you just spray some kind of cleaner down the intake pipe?? Cheers ill have a lookie for the vcds stuff.

Thanks mate.

There are a couple of options. You can either get a kit to clean the turbo where you disconnect the exhaust pipe off the turbo underneath and fill it will a cleaner.

The other option is to remove the turbo and have it cleaned/clean it yourself or get a garage to do all this for you.

Phil

I had the turbo off and used some cleaner then left it to drain and dry up. Then refitted it and smashed it down the motorway for a bit.

Cheers gents that'll be a weekend job then. Is the turbo easy to access from underneith? Did you use special turbo cleaner or just carb cleaner then some kind of mec oil or something similar? Ill have a look for the kit cheers!
