Drone Sounds & Instrument Panel Replacement

Featured Replies

I have new wheel bearings on the front both sides and yet I still have a done sound which sounds as if it is coming from the middle to OFS front. My car passed MOT but advised my OFS front tyre needed replacing. Many people on the net have suggested it may be the tyre, CV joint or at worst diff bearings. Any thoughts?

Also I too have the same old issue regarding my instrument dials coming on and off when fuse 15 is in but works ok without fuse 15. Can I simply replace the instrument cluster or would I have to buy a new ECU as well as someone told me that the imoboliser is on the instrument cluster?

Thanks

I think you need the SKU and vag-tacho to recode the new cluster for your current keys.

It is worth popping the cluster out and check for poor solder joints (reflow them), an dif that doesn't help consider replacing the two voltage regulators. Much cheaper than forking out for a PCB/cluster.

you can get a drone from the inside edge of the nsr tyre wearing funny(common issuse),worth checking :)

thanks guys. I have most of the joints resloded and it didnt help. The only thing I can thing of is to replace the capacitors. What does the voltage regulators look like?

All of my tyres were checked in the MOT. The back ones are fine just the OSF tyre needs replacing. Does anyone think that diff bearings might be it as my mechanic doesnt seem to think so.

got the same drone noise on my car had everthing checked bearings, gearbox ect,its the tyres makeing the noise had it to a few garages and they all said the same.tyres

It turns out the noise was caused by the alternator pully of all things. The pully has come right off the shaft of the alternator. I have ordered a new pully and Im hoping it will go on the alternator as the end of the shaft looks a little tapered. :-(

Did your drone change pitch with speed or was it a constant pitch that changed volume? I've always found wheel bearings remain at a constant pitch but I currently have a drone that changes pitch.

Mine did this too.... You need a special tool for fitting the new pully though.

I too have a constant drone, which is relative to road (not engine) speed.

I got new front tyres which reduced it but it's still there. My local garage says the wheel bearings and all associated joins are fine. Guess it may be an artifact of these cars as they get older.

That is exactly what my alternator did to my pulley but it looks like the inside of the pulley is stuck onto the shaft of the alternator as there is no spline inside the pulley. The inside of the pulley is smooth and hollow. The drone sound dud disappear after the pulley came of and the pitch of the drone did change according to speed. I too have new tyres and bearings both sides. Could it be diff bearings?
