Over topping with oil

Newbie69, can i ask,

was the Oil after the Oil change then checked as at the correct level after the oil was brought up to running temperature,

and are you checking it now after running it to above 85 degrees celcius and then letting it sit for a couple of minutes before Dipping?

george

You are right, it should be checked while at running temperature as it will be more expanded than when at say 25 degrees Celcius. I didn't check it like that, but I know for sure that I poured just a little more than 3 litres in, starting from absolutely 0 level this time. Since the capacity is 3.6, I'd calculate there is sometihng between 5-10% tolerance for volume expansion and it would still be below max since I didn't bring to MAX this time. Will do another check tomorrow just to be 100% but I don't suspect there will be a problem.

Newbie, I'm sure it will be fine. The main damage from overfilling by such a large amount is caused by too much sump/crankcase pressure. This can lead to engine gaskets blowing and serious engine damage. If it hasn't happend (and you would probably already know if it had) your engine is likely to be fine. The cat won't have been harmed, particularly as you couldn't see smoke. Just make sure the level is correct and just drive it keeping a careful check on the oil level for while to make sure she isn't losing any.

Yes, I'll be having a close look on it for some time, until everything seems to be stable... Thanks for the reassuring, it's just as important as the technical advice in situations like this!

you could also ask sheppeygirl how much oil it needs to make a KA sound like a washing machine (clue its only supposed to have 3.5 litres, i drained over 6 litres out) she said it sounded funny and when i followed her to get her home my windscreen got a liberal coating of oil and some big puffs of white smoke out back of said KA

then ask her how i drive said KA to give it a blow through / itialian tune up and show it is still ok after i had drained / refilled the oil and serviced it ,

i think you will need an swear word filter

Good luck with it. Overfilling is generally bad news, however if you drain it now it should be okay. I would use Skoda Assist
