Octavia question after one week of ownership

Featured Replies

Didn't get any replies in the Octavia section so thought I would try here:-

I have had my 1 year old, 12500 mile 1.6TDi CDR Elegance for a week now and have a few outstanding questions having waded through the not overly clear handbook.

1. Can't find the service interval display on maxidot or elsewhere despite following the instructions.

2. Is the first service 20,000 miles or two years as stated by the dealer or is it 20,000 kilometres.

3. The clutch feels a bit "gritty" when you depress the pedal. Reminds me of the old days when a thrust bearing was starting to go. Another one that I test drove was exactly the same though.

Drives really nicely and got 70.5 mpg on a 150 mile run which was cool.

1/2) It's about 18.5k miles maximum on the variable service, although it can come anywhere from 9k.

The computer will warn you 1000 miles before it's due.

If you're going to be doing less than 12k per year, I'd suggest getting it moved to fixed interval servicing, which is every year or 12k miles.

3) Might be worth asking them to look at bleeding the clutch hydraulics, since you've not had it long.

Fixed is 15000km (9500 miles) / 1yr unless the 1.6d is different.

Hmm Yep, it does look like it's every 9k.

That's very very short and I could have sworn it was 12k. Must have been the fabia vRS or something none VAG that was 12k miles then.

My mistake.

It says QG1 in the service book which I understand means variable. So does this mean something will come up on the trip screen telling me when it is due? I just want to make sure i don't invalidate the warranty.

You should get a 1000 mile warning, but if it hasn't come up by about 18k miles since the last service, then book it in.

If you're not doing that sort of mileage in a year, or just over a year, then I'd get it changed anually, with the correct oil and a new filter anyway.

OK Thanks for the suggestions.

then I'd get it changed anally,

I'd recommend you have it changed via the sump plug, that's much more comfortable.

makes no odds what annual mileage your doing, the only variable part of the interval service is the oil change, because you have the 1.6 ctdi with dpf you should use long life oil anyway so just let the oil quality sensor do its job and see how far you get, the service indicator will not let go over 2 years regardless of oil quality

You might say that, but having changed a 10k mile nearly 2 year and a nearly 18.5k mile same spec octavia, literally seconds apart, I can tell you that the oil from the 10k car was much thicker, dirtier and generally quite nasty.

This is partly because the lower mileage car does more cold starts and gets up to temp for less time, so the oil doesn't do as well.

Yes in theory you could leave it 2 years, but bearing in mind you've a turbo and the rest, why would you take the chance of going against the skoda advice of fixed if <10k miles a year?

These massive service intervals are there just to please fleet buyers IMO. First thing I did with mine after changing the oil (still used the required 507.00 long life oil for the variable though. you don't penny pinch on oil) is going to 'fixed'. I will do mine yearly, which is likely to be no more than 8,000-9,000miles.
