Difference between Castrol Edge 5w40s

Featured Replies

Just wanted to get a second opinion on this. There are two Castrol Edge 5w40 out there. One is called Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40, supposedly for Diesel engines, the other just Castrol Edge 5w40.

They both meet VW 502 00, 505 00 which are the specs recommended for the vRS, but the TD version meets also VW 505 01. However the TD version is not officially said to meet ACEA A3/B4 but just ACEA C3. http://castroledge.com/oil-range/turbo-diesel-5w-40 while the simple 5w40 version is clearly said to support all A3/B4/C3 http://castroledge.com/oil-range/5w-40 I dont know however If that is of any importance for a vRS as the user manual asks only about VW 502 / 505 specs and not ACEA.

Once I had emailed opieoils.co.uk asking which one is suitable for the vRS and the response was that they will both do the same good on the vRS and that the "Diesel" mark is mainly for marketing purposes as the TD version meets some specific diesel requirements which the simple 5w40 doesn't. This statement is also repeated as a comment on the product's page on opieoils: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-719-castrol-edge-turbo-diesel-fst-5w-40-advanced-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx

Do you agree they are both ok for the vRS?

i have used the turbo diesel edge, as the diesel specific oils normaly have more detergent content to keep a diesel engine cleaner internally and stop the build up of gum and laquer in the oil ways etc (although not so sure this is still as important as it used to be)

and to be honest the small differnce in cost compared to costs of engine issues no brainer to me

oil, filters, brakes and steering components to me a false economies if you try and save on them

It is highly probable that the TD version will contain a different/enhanced additive package to deal with the specific rigours of diesel engine operation that are not required to pass the ACEA (Association Constructeurs European Automobiles or something like that) A3 and B3 test profiles. As engine testing is an incredibly expensive process, it is also highly probable that Castrol (BP) did not bother to subject the TD version to the ACEA A3/B3 test protocol because a) they already have the Standard Edge to pass these or B) they had some concerns that the engine testing within the A3/B3 protocol would not be met.

Personally i would only use it in the vRS if this were the only option as the different/enhanced additive package may not be the optimum for a petrol engine, or at least one as highly stressed as the TFSI (especially mine which burns oil at the rate it does). Even if does still have the relevant VW approvals.
