Need a crimping tool...

Featured Replies

...and not one of those ones for doing your hair! :giggle:

Need a crimping tool for bullet connectors - not going to be used massively so don't need something professional or hugely expensive. I know Halfords do one but it doesn't look like it's up to much and reviews seem to suggest that it doesn't do a particularly good job.

Any recommendations?

can't you just use a pair of needle nose pliers for that if you won't use it much, they've worked fine for me in the past, fixing electric fences etc

If they do a good enough job then I'd be happy with that. Just need a pair of needle nose pliers now ;)

If you're serious about crimping, I would recommend something like http://www.amazon.co...39525939&sr=8-3 The one above should be fine for occasional use though.

Looks not too bad for the price .Maplin do one ,but it's three times the price. Although ,I'd prefer to pay the extra and get the Screwfix ones .

However ,I'd stay from the e bay type. Once you've used a decent ratchet multi crimper, you'll see why.

Two tips ,if you've not used this sort before -

1) -Test each crimp by pulling on the wire ,GENTLY.

2) If the wire is smaller than the smallest crimp, double it over.

And last but not least, if it's something like a job on the car, make it impossible to reverse polarity by using a male on the +equipment end , and a female on the negative equipment end. Saves the posibility of nasty bangs & expensive smoke, before fuse blows .( Even the most carefull of us can do it)

Get a set of ratchet crimpers. Pliers just don't produce a reliable connection. They are a bit more expensive, but they do produce reliable, strong connection. It's very difficult to get it wrong.

When you are broken down with an electrical fault behind the dash, no tools to get to it, middle of nowhere, late at night, no mobile phone reception, freezing cold, pouring with rain - you'll will regret not doing it properly :)

I'm a bit sad and try to solder and crimp, where possible. Lol :)

If it was a butt splice, I would agree (don't use them), but this is a bullet crimp so you need to be able to disconnect it

Sorry I couldn't help myself lol

Rachet type is what I use, local electrical wholesalers, about £15 IIRC
