Strange noise from nearside wheel arch at speed

Featured Replies

Driving down the motorway on Thursday evening (at motorway speed) I got the strangest sound from the nearside wheel arch. It was as if something was attached to the wheel and hitting the wheel arch as the wheel rotated it lasted only for a few seconds and only happened once ( 2.5 hour journey). The noise was a bit like going over a rumble strip in the road but much louder and confined to just the nearside front wheel. I checked and could find nothing obviously wrong. Back on the motorway on Monday evening, the same thing happened again, as before only the once and just for a few seconds (same journey but in reverse). The tyres (Kumho) are in good condition, the car is a 2005 Mk1 1.9 tdi auto. Any theories?

It turned out that my wife had gone through a pot hole, and I thought the tracking had been affected as the car also developed a steering wobble. Anyway I took it in to the tyre shop and was horrified to see that the inside edge of the tyre had peeled away from the steel lining over half way round and was a blowout waiting to happen! So beware of strange noises as it could be a tyre on the verge of disintegration. I have attached a photo.
