Rust on tailgate

Featured Replies

Known issue from some other threads I have seen on here, rust on the tailgate where the lip is above the number plate, right on the edge. I took mine to the dealers yesterday. It appears that the bodyshop in Preston, Panel Craft have applied to SKODA to replace the WHOLE TAILGATE! Shocked at this, but not at all concerned. Seems if they are re sprayed, they rust again from the inside. Anyone else had this repair?

I had this on my last 56 plate vrs after 2 failed repairs skoda decided to replace the whole tailgate as they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't happen again.

Not quite the same issue but my Mk I Octy had a tiny spot of bubbling just below the window on the tailgate. As it was within the six years anti-corrosion period I mentioned it to the dealer and they replaced the whole tailgate straight off. Just transferred the bits over.

You should feel privileged! Skoda UK wouldn't approve a repair on my bootlid with the same issue!

what dealer did you go to ? All skoda asked of my dealership was to take a few photos and paint depth readings to determine if it had been re-painted before and within a week it was approved for repair 6 months later it was then approved for replacement as the repair didnt solve the issue.

West End Garage, Uphall. They took paint depth readings on the boot lid and I assume it had never been repainted as they never mentioned it.

They did say it was unlikely SUK would cover the bill as I am the 3rd owner and the car was bought from a non franchise dealer.

I pursued the issue with SUK who claimed it wasn't covered under the 12 year anti corrosion warranty as it was a mechanical issue (the flex in the bootlid causing the seam to crack and allow in water). They did say that it would have been covered if the car was 3 years old or less - the car was 3 and a half!

I was pretty peeved off with the experience and ended up getting the boot lid repainted by a former VAG approved bodyshop. Thankfully the car hasn't missed a beat mechanically since I've owned it so I don't feel as raw about it anymore!

That really sucked it always amazes me how warranty claims vary from dealer to dealer some get them sorted with no issues and others just dont seem to be able to get anything sorted. west end garage i think thats the same one grizzle had issues with for warranty work too not 100% though. yet my local dealer has been first class with anything i have had to get sorted so far.

In my case it was the dealer (D M Keith, Leeds) I bought the car from (new). They said it was the only way to guarantee the rust wouldn't come back.

So what's the length of the corrosion guarantee from Skoda then? I've had a '58 plate from brand new and, touchwood, it's fine, but it'd be handy to know that sort of thing.

Knowledge is the bomb, and all that!

Unless it says the warranty is non-transferable in the terms, then the above doesn't matter. The warranty is a binding contract on Skoda UK, and can be pursued through the Small Claims Court if they deny a valid claim, so any exclusions must be clearly stated in the terms of the warranty.

Just FYI, I was told by a solicitor it wasn't reasonable for a relatives 5 year old Octavia to have rust, and to pursue the matter as a breach of the Sales Of Goods Act against the supplying dealer.

Good to know it's fixed at least :)

Can I confirm please........Are you talking about rust issues on estates only?

I had the same issue on my MK1 estate.

Mine was an estate - part-ex'd on Monday for the Yeti. That bubbling was the only rust I ever found on the paintwork in 9+ years - far better than any of the fords I had before that.

Just a side note. My courtesy car is a 1.6 CR diesel Monte Carlo Fabia. What a great little car! Fantastic engine, and it feels quick and nimble. Trouble is the girl at Simpsons pointed out that someone had kerbed the alloy. On my drive back to Harrogate a truck pulled round a bus and forced me into the kerb.

Now it's got two chunks out of it. This is after I promised I would take good care of it :-(( Gutted.
