Droning noise, PROBLEM FOUND

Featured Replies

i have a 51 plate vrs octavia, and it makes a noise like a droneing noise when i drive. you can here itmore when coming to a stop,i was told it was the tyres,so went and got new wheels and tyres and its still doing it,changed discs, pads all wheel bearings checked everything even had the gearbox checked, and still cant find where its coming from, any help would be great as its doing my head in keep buying parts for nothing.thanks ste

Im sure it will be a wheel bearing mate, mines droning currently and i have to wait until it gets worse because when checked (i jacked it up and span it and checked for play) it and there were no apparent problems. However given time it will get worse and the car will then let you know which one it is.

mine makes noise from 35-45mph just now, and it will progress from there, turn the radio up and just wait a while

Driveshaft?

Gearbox diff whining?

Try a gearbox oil change maybe? Made my shifts 10x better

ah now youve got me thinking. I have just changed my gearbox oil, and regreased my drive shafts after clutch change. However it makes no difference if i dip the clutch could it still be diff or shafts?

had new bearings, had the gear boxed checked, hardly hear the noise after 35 its more there at low speeds or when pulling up to stop.

think it must be somthing to do with the brakes as when coming to a stop and press the brakes thats when you hear the noise and the harder you press the worst it gets any ideas what it could be,had new disc and pads as thought it was that.

I just did a quick search around and it seems it may be quite a simple fix, some others have complained elsewhere on the net of exactly the same problem. TRACKING! they recommend that if set correctly and it still makes the noise then have tracking set to zero. So try tracking mate, alot have brought this up on other forums etc.

The other high ranking issue is glazed brake pads, remove them and scrub them up real good with sandpaper - coarse

thanks for the replys will get it tracked and get some more disc and pads as the brembos a bought feel crap.

just remember be carefull not to get any contaminent on the pads or discs like grease, and sand up the pads prior to fitting to avoid glazing the primary cause of brake drone. apparently. Update us mate

will do thanks

Are you running drilled and grooved discs or uprated pads like green stuff or red stuff mate?

Identical to mine.... exact speeds mine comes on too.... although it will continue up to higher speeds but 35-45mph is loudest (still not that loud; doesn't bother me too much). I too reckon it's wheel bearings.

i now think its coming from the rear, as its loud enough that if it was fronts i would feel it through the wheel, plus when i had people in the back it was marginally louder

i had this exact same problem, clould hear it up to 35mph, but worst under braking at very low speeds, eventually it stopped and now i have a slight knocking.

please post up if you get it sorted,

ive had wheel bearings done and it wasnt that, gona do tracking and driveshafts/cv joints next

(drilled and grooved pads on mine)

mine only does it under braking at low speeds, defo not box or wheel bearings as have been changed,i have groved discs, going to change them and get it tracked and see if that sorts it out,its just getting the time to do it with work, will post on here as soon as i sort it

To those running drilled and grooved discs, i work at a second hand car sales and have had numorous cars come in with these discs on and they all made droning noises when braking and had to be changed for customer satisfaction so i have never bothered entertaining them either.. Its just a thought as you have changed wheel bearings and tyres in cant be much else i would go for that

Are you sure it's not the rear wheel bearings?

When I had a Fabia, I thought I could hear a droning that went away at about 35... Thought it was coming from the front.

It was only at the point where the noise became much louder that I realised it was coming from the rear... Jacked up the rear, span the wheels without the handbrake on. One wheel hardly span, the other span away.

Realised it was a rear wheel bearing - changed it and it went away.

Recommendation though - if you can afford it at the time... Change both rears. Within 2000 miles the other side died exactly the same death. The very definition of MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure).

Also be prepared - the longer you leave the droning for... The more chance there is of thermal seizing where you'll end up needing a blowtorch to heat up the hub as well as hub pullers to get the sod off - the extra heat generated causes the hub to effectively 'weld' onto the axle.

ive discovered mine is coming from the rear, jacked up each corner and span each wheel, one of which was sounding a little rough so that be he

That'd be +1 to me then ;)

Quite  , and - 48 to me, pounds that is, just ordered a new hub bearing assy and a nice shiny hub puller. The inner race can be dremeled and cracked off. about 45 minutes work i recon.

TOOK MY CAR TO A MATES GARAGE AS THE NOISE WAS GETTING WORSE. HE SAID THE PADS WERE RUBBING ON THE DISCS AS HE SAID THEY HAD A LIP ON THEM,HE TOOK THE DISC OF AND GROUND THEM DOWN A LITTLE TO CHECK AND THE NOISE IS ALMOST GONE,HE SAID GET NEW DICS AND PADS AND THE NOISE WILL GO AWAY.

credit to gray88 for this one then! Glad your sorted mate

I have the same problem. A bearing drone sound. I have new tyres and wheel bearings but it is still doing it. The only way to tell if it is diff bearings is if the speedo needle bobs up and down as the diff bearings will be moving although they cannot collapse. However, for me the sound is coming from the inner gaiter on the drivers side drive shaft. There is a tripod setup inside the inner gaiter and on three seperate points of the tripod is three bearings.

So for what its worth changing the driveshaft is the answer for me and they are only about £30 on ebay.

I have had a similar whirring noise at 30 mph but most noticeable at 60-75mph. First Garage said wheel bearing but could not be sure which one. This is after changing tyres. So went to main dealer today for 2nd opinion who think it may be a bearing in the gearbox. They need to strip it to diagnose which I am not looking forward to the labour charges.

My car is an 08 Octavia 1.9TDI with only 42k on clock. I am the 2nd owner but have had it for nearly 2.5 years and have always had main service done by this dealer. Worst case scenario I am hoping Skoda can contribute but am waiting in dread as to what dealer says needs doing.

Any idea what a) cost of new box is and B) cost of replaceing bearings.

box at a dealer? not much change out of a grand

bearings at dealer? £200 front £120-£150 rear
