Turbo sometimes works and sometimes doesn't!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help with a perplexing problem

Occasionally my car behaves as if the turbo has failed and I can't accelerate properly - this happened the other day on the m25 in the overtaking lane, all of a sudden I just put my foot down and nothing happened - I had my foot flat to the floor and it wouldn't pull, it was like trying to overtake in an old van and I couldn't get over 65 :-/

I rang friends who suggested various things, from turbo failure to boost pipes splitting or oil in the intercooler

But the next day, as if by magic, I restarted it in the morning and it was back to normal with no apparent probs whatsoever :-/

Does anyone have an idea of what this could be?

Thanks

I'll put £1 on it! Definitely sounds like that.

Your options are:

check the vacuum hoses to the actuator

check the actuator is able to move

If both of these seem ok then your options are:

remove and clean turbo

get a turbo cleaning kit that can be done with the turbo in situ

yep, follow hose down from n71 (black box with about 6 pipes coming out of it top of drivers side wing , just infornt of the windscreen) down the back of the engine to the turbo acutator, see if it is split or damaged

on some of the newer cars i beilieve the turbo has an electric actuator if that is the case check the connection and wiring loom to it

Do you know if there are any error codes stored?

Thanks for all the info, can anyone please tell me what could cause sticky vanes?

Also won't it be hard to see if any pipe woke is split? It's kinda cramped and black down there....

If its turbo will main dealer replace under warranty?

I had planned to upgrade turbo to a hybrid pd150 at some stage

Not sure about error codes, i'll need to take it to the stealers

As per my other thread though, the car is mapped and will need reverting to standard before it goes in....

Not sure if this process (via STS) will erase any error codes...

easiest way is remove the black plastic engine cover, and follow as far was you can, then from under side remove the plastic under tray and look up with a torch

if the engines cold you can feel a fair way down

2p says its the magical black box next to the coolant, need an error code for more clues.

Could also be map sensor

Thanks all, btw does anyone have any tips on cheapest way of getting hybrid 150 turbo?

Do u have to buy a standard 150 and then send away to get the internals modded or is it cheaper just to pay a specialist directly to source and mod?

Not being daft, But did you any chance hit the limiter?

As they have a safe guard to stop you destroying the engine and will limit you untill you switch the car off and back on.

Didn't know that... probably cause I've never revved that high before... not much point in going past 3000 rpm. Unless you have a remap of course :)

Exactly how mine behaved, mine was the wiring to the Map sensor.
