Fragile wheels?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of getting a Monte, but a bit worried about those 17 inch wheels with rubber band thickness tyres !

Any problems to worry about ?

I'm thinking of pothole damage and tyre wear.

Or am I worrying about nothing ?

Thanks for any replies.

There are a few posts on here about issues with the alloys, not sure if it was Monte's, but generally sorted out under warranty.

If you hit a big enough pothole and a high enough speed then I think just about anything short of some massive 4x4 wheel is going to get potentially damaged. Depending on how you park, the narrower the tyre wall, the greater risk of alloy damage if you kerb it.

Not sure if there is an issue with greater tyre wear, wouldn't have thought so if you run at the correct pressures. Tyres are probably a bit more expensive than the equivalents for 15 or 16 inch rims.

I have had various wheel sizes and not really had any issue out-with the wife kerbing them!

Thanks for the reply.

I've just returned from a day long test drive in a Monte tsi 105-- 160 miles at an average of 51.3 mpg- mainly motorways and kept to speed limits most of the time.

Impressed with the performance, wheels a bit bumpy and noisy on bad surfaces, but not as bad as expected.

I think I may end up buying one !!!

We haven't had reports of people breaking wheels, they seem more than strong enough.
