Kerbweights of Superb2 SE

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm looking at changing my current Superb1 for a Superb2 TDI PD 140 SE 2.0 5dr, I tow a caravan and all the info I get says that the Superb2 will tow 1800kg braked. I am an experienced at towing a caravan and whilst it is acceptable for some one with towing experience to tow up to 100% i'm not too keen on towing over it.

Autotrader claims the kerbweight to be 1490kg, I can't fined the exact car on the Skoda site but the 2.0 CR 170 is quoted as 1480kg on Autotrader but on Skoda site the kerbweight is quoted as 1555kg.

I have also found on another site quoting the PD 140 2.0tdi kerbweight to be 1569kg, so you see my confusion!

Don't know if this is right but I have read that Skoda did quote some of their weights with out the usual Driver weight, half a tank of fuel weight and others to make ther kerbweight look better?

Has anyone got a definitive answer to help me out? Cheers all.

Please note I do know about the 85% rule when towing a caravan but this is more aimed at novice drivers and no more than 100% for experienced towcar driver, I can quote my Camping and Caravanning club magazine that I got today that have done a towcar test and this is their opinion also.

These are only recommendations and you would be legally within your right to tow upto 1800kg with this car as stated by the manufacturer, As I tow a caravan with a MTPLM of 1490kg it very close to the 100% and as I've said I deffinately don't want to got over it.

The blurb states the following.

Hatch, (Estate)

1. 140PS, kerb weight 1472kg (1494kg), total kerb weight (including driver and equipment) 2110kg (2132kg).

2. 140PS DSG is 1494kg (1516kg) and 2132kg (2154kg).

3. 170PS 1480kg (1502kg) and 2118kg (2140kg).

4. 170PS DSG is 1497kg (1519kg) and 2135kg (2157kg).

If I have read the broucher correctly.

Hope it helps.

They were quoted without some months ago, I had the same query back in Feb when I was ordering. Maybe yhey have updated the figures recently. I'll have a look in the Feb Brochure I have this evening. My van is around 1460 and I worked out we should tow quite comfortably using 'normal' kerbweights.

Thanks for the reply, just a couple of quick questions, what model do you have, is it the 2.0 PD SE? What do you class as 'normal' kerbweight? and whats the Superb2 like as a Towcar? as I can't fault the Superb1 at all. Cheers

OK. Right now I don't have one. It's supposed to be being built this very week. I've ordered the 2.0 CR (not the PD) with 4x4 and the 170 engine, as I had one last year as a lease though I never towed with it (not allowed a towbar).

When I say normal kerbweight, my understanding from reading a number of forums (including this one and caravan talk) that Skoda specify kerbweight with no driver and the tank empty, whereas pretty well everyone else specified it with driver and a tank of fuel. However it seems they have changed that since I did my calculations.

Looking at kerbweight on the skoda website it says for my model the kerbweight is 1654 kilos, where the brochure I have says 1579 for the same car. Our van is 1350 MPLTM (lighter than I thought, I keep doing that) so on the one figure is right on the 85%, but with the other is 81%.

I had been looking at other models including the Superb DSG instead of 4x4 or an octy or Yeti, and these would have pushed me over the 85% guidance with the old figures.

This is from the caravan club, if the year is right,

Make Skoda Range SE 2.0 TDI CR 140bhp Model Superb Year 2010 Fuel type Diesel Transmission type Manual Body type Hatchback Kerb weight 1547.00kg Towing limit 1800.00kg Gross vehicle weight 2110.00kg Gross train weight 3910.00kg Nose weight 75.00kg BHP 140 RPM for maximum BHP 4200.00 Maximum torque 320.00 RPM for maximum torque 1750.00

That kind of adds up, I guess. The Gross weight is the same as for this years 2.0 CR 140PS (2110). The brochure I have (with the lower, none driver etc weights) says 1472kg which is close to the 1490kg given by Autotrader, so is probably Skodas 'old style' figure for that car. That's now listed on Skodas website with the 'new' method as 1547kg that is 75kg higher. So I guess it's safe to assume you should add 75kg to the 1490kg as the kerbweight including driver and some fuel.

It can be worth spending a tenner or so at a weigh bridge to get it right. My local recycling/waste transfer 'TIP' has a weighbridge and I've been surprised at some of the weigh results I've had over the years. Two months ago shortly after getting mine I had it weighed. With spare wheel, jack, towbar (but not removeable swan neck ball which I forgot) 50% fuel, ( regs state 90% fuel) me (fat basxxxd) and nothing else, the two check weighs both came in at 1600kg exactly. The weight of all the toys etc of the Dsg Elegance add up.

The weigh certificates give reassurance in deciding your own margins when calculating the different car/caravan stats.

Agree with SlobbyK...In think I might do the same sometime, although I know I'll be well within my limits. Presume by ‘5 door’ the OP means it's the hatch version as I don't think the estate ever came with the 140PD engine. Also presume it's not new, therefore. The Jan 2010 brochure quotes kerb weight of the 140PD hatch as 1547kg and at that time they were including the 75kg for driver and luggage as per the EC directive (in order to confuse everyone they have since changed their minds and now quote without driver and luggage).

This is from the NTTA website..."The usual definition of kerb weight is a vehicle in its ready to use condition with all tools, spare wheel etc. and a full tank of fuel. Many vehicle manufacturers are, however, now following European Directive 95/48/EC which specifies the kerb weight as a car in ready to drive condition with the fuel tank 90% full, a driver on board weighing 68 kg and luggage of 7 kg. Any extras or accessories fitted after purchase will increase the weight and reduce both payload capacity and hence the towing limit."

God knows where they found 68kg adults…the local stables, perhaps?

So you need to add on the weight of a towbar (22kgs for a detachable swan-neck), spare wheel if fitted and any other optional extras added to the car spec. Also, note that the quoted weights in the brochure and manual are for the base trim and do not include weight for any manufacturer fitted extras as you go up the model range. Some manufacturers (I know Vauxhall do from my last car) quote additional weights for different trim levels in their spec sheets in the user manual but I've yet to find this in the Skoda manual. I have an elegance model with a dozen options including the pano roof and it’s possibly 30-40kg heavier than the base model…it will be interesting to find out…now where is my nearest council run weighbridge.

One other really confusing thing to note is some very poor (in)consistencies in Skoda’s various documentation. Although the brochure now quotes kerb weights without the 68kg driver (jockey) and luggage (7kg…must be a handbag), the owner’s manual quotes the following, “The kerb weight contains a fuel tank topped up to 90 % and a driver weight of 75 kg.” See page 223 of the latest May12 manual. I wish they could show more consistency.

I have pdf copies of brochures back to Jan 2010. PM me if you need any of these for when your car was built.
