Sadly the above car has been resigned to donor only, and I have all the carpet out to go in my car, eventually. As an aside, my main car is now back on the road, and plan to use it over the summer a

  • **** it, just get a tin of red gloss, a 1" brush. Job done

Finally finished the hard part tonight. Getting the really bad layer of paint off

Last little bit to go (popped washer out to ensure clean match to virgin paint under it)

A WET bonnet, all sanded, but need to do some serious refinement and going over some areas which when looked at closely, still has some shadowiness effect in it

DSCN4171.jpg

Washed and dried off (some dampness still in it in this shot) Anyone think I could just polish all this out and not bother with finer grades of wet & dry first? :D

Is it too soon for a full-car shot? :)

Looking very nice Jason, good to see a nice car come back to life.

Good point. Not done one for some time.....

I did the sunroof panel tonight - 240 grit right down to 2000 then machine polish and its come up OK, but needs refining again with 2000 & 2500 paper before polishing again. 240 grit really is quite harsh but it is necessary for the greater end result.

Attacked the bonnet tonight (had a bit of a lull in work thanks to stag weekend and the weather) which revealed whilst a good improvement is had, there are still serious wet sanding marks which need to be either wet sanded again with finer grades, or I simply keep hitting it with the polisher.

Taped off one area to get before and after. Quite impressed.

Eyeing up the sun reveals the extent of the further correction needed

And a wobbly shot from when I'd half done the bonnet....

Remember my crappy wing? (2 shots below as a reminder, before, and then after trying machine polishing)

Well, today I decided to hit with the wet sanding paper. Didn't go any more aggressive than 600 grit, with refining done using 1200, then 1500 grit. This helped to minimise the scratching left in the paint which is tough to polish out. It came up as well as I could have hoped in the short term, but it shall need another going over, perhaps just with 2000 grit then another polish.

Car overall is beginning to look a bit more presentable, although not happy with the front offside damage...

I think there's one of these for sale on the road between Babbacombe and Torquay. Thought it was yours at first!! :D

  • Author

Definitely not my car for sale down in Torbay.

Bit more of a full shot. Still lots to do.....

And what's the plan to clean the driveway?

And what's the plan to clean the driveway?

Don't care. Its actually the base/floor of a knocked down annexe/building, Should just brush off with hot water & maybe a bit of white spirit,

Car is beginning to all look the same colour now....

This needs to be tracked at Combe dude :D coming along nicely now, how has the bonnet refined down now?

Have you tried the megs MF system with their cutting compound? With a good bit of pressure it cuts quite heavily! You can also use the mf pads with something like #105 which should have more cut again than their d300

  • Author

Will be using a wool pad with megs cutting compound. Needed to borrow a rotary though. Bonnet is OK from a distance, but up close there are still LOTS of sanding marks left by the 240 grit paper. I just need to cut the rest back to match that deeper cut layer.

  • Author

Well, I borrowed a rotary from a local(ish) Briskodian. :D I have to say, for the first time using one (my arms hurt :D) its done good. Using a wool pad with megs cutting compound, followed by a sweep with the DAS6.

Unfortunately sun was half hidden in a cloud so my "before" shot is not the best

DSC_0390.jpg

The after was in full sun, and it still shows more work needed but hell of an improvement given I had been using 240 grit wet and dry on this paint....

Reflection of the house is a lot clearer than it was before. (see last photo for comparison)

Very good work there!

Now riding on new wheels. Definitely prefer them even if they are the same style exactly, just more of a black theme going on.

Quick update. Attacked the rear end tonight in two stages. One with a small wool pad to get into and polish hard all those hard to reach areas. Then cleaning up with the big pad / microfibre cloth as much as possible. You can't tell a massive difference in the two pics but it looks much better in the flesh

Good work Jason. Looking much tidier

Finally have two fully working electric windows for ALL the travel of the glass now. :D

Firs time I've seen this. Great work so far.

What are you going to do with this when it's finished?

Sorry if I missed that somewhere, but you already have a capable track car.

  • Author

This is NOT a capable track car.... It looks good but its only 120bhp or so, but it does handle well.

It will be sold once I am happy with it. I want it to go to someone who will look after it, not like the last owner.

Ah, I see.

This is one of your fixer-upper projects. :)

  • Author

Yeah, although I've only done a couple before, this is the first one I got with the intention of having as a 2nd car whilst I do it.
