Adaptive Headlight not Working

Featured Replies

Hi, Adaptive Headlights not working on my 58 Plate Skoda Superb Elegance MK2, I think it may have resulted from a repair to a broken wire which caused my Wipers to stop working completely.

An auto Electrician has repaired the Wipers by fixing a Loose/Broken wire. Now I have a Warning Light on on my Instrument Panel ( A circle with an upside down Exclamation mark in it) along with a Message on the Information display that reads "No Bend Lighting (AFS) Function.Check Manual"

This Appears every time the car starts up or the Ignition goes on.

If I put the Lights to the Auto position whether they are On or Not I can hear the Adaptive Headlight motors creaking away until they come to a stop.

Anyone have any Idea of a cure for this? the Cars out of warranty by 20,000 miles so know way do I wish to sell a kidney to pay for a Main dealer to check it out>

I would take it back to the " auto electrician" if the lights were ok till he carried out his "repair"

Agree with that.

I mentioned it when I picked up the car, Normally these lights Lower then go In and out when they come on in the Automatic mode..the In and out part of that is not happening now.

I just worry that It's going to cost me more and more as for every fix another unforseen side effect of the fix occurs...

Why should it cost you as they were working before they touched it?

I got the same problem with mine. They are doing their test when u start the engine but right after the error message comes up. My mechanic connected to the computer. It sais something like control unit permanent fault. Tried recoding, but not working. I can't delete the faults either. Didn't go to skoda just yet.......

Check the 3 rubber covers that you need to remove to get the bulbs. One of the covers on mine wasn't fitted and water got into headlight killing the electronics within. That gave me the same error.

I needed a complete headlamp replacement to fix it.

I do have a spare headlamp assembly, someone reversed into it and broke the mounting clips. It was working electically though, and still has the 2 modules underneath it.

Did you try connecting a VCDS? Try to get hold of one and see what the "Meas Blocks" say.

Went to skoda with the same problem. They made a list of parts they think i should replace. Right headlight unit, Xenon control unit, cornering module, xenon bulb, and some wireing. All together about 1100 quid. And they'r still not sure if gonna work. I bought a vcds cable. Showes me no error. But right hand head light wont move right and left, only up and down. I'm lost. Still think it's the afs control unit needed recoding. Just ain't got the right code.

Typical, they don't know what it is, so just replace the whole lot at your expense in the hope it will fix it.

That's when a technician becomes a fitter. All too common nowadays, if the computer says 'no' then replace everything and hope for the best. :wonder: If I did that with air con systems I would have been out of work years ago.

What happened to proper diagnostic and fault finding techniques?

takes too long for a Technician ( and I use the word very loosely as dealers call anyone in the workshop side of the business a Technician) to be trained, when I started in the trade it was a 5 year apprenticeship to get to mechanic level, I had passed all examinations up to Technician within this time but was not classed as Technician until the 5 years was up. Today a dealer obtains VCDS, and a manual take on somebody who can read and plug it in and they are a Technician, if no fault shows there is no fault. This works on electrical faults, but mechanical faults are a complete mystery to them, usually they contact Skoda U.K. for advice and that is almost as useless as they are just office staff with a list of answers to a few complaints. Dealers get regular updates on faults from Skoda but when you ask about them they claim to know nothing about them. Time for vehicles to be simplified again, easier to repair and guaranteed to have minimal problems.

Look for a dealer who has some older repair staff, not 16 year old tecnicians who are n ot sufficiently trained.

I mentioned it when I picked up the car.

And what did he say!?

He's likely caused this issue.
