So? did you choose the engine first or the car?

One big thing that got me to the garage in the first place was the fact that skoda had slapped the 180 bhp turbo VW/Audi engine into the octavia and the same applies with the fabia vRS. The engine was a real seller :D .

Did it influence you? For the same reason I look on Hondas with admiration,it's their vtecs (never driven one,just hear good things).By the same token (and not just the style thing) I have in recent years avoided Rover,get petrified by citroens but once even considered looking at a Ssang yong Rexton just because it has a Mercedes engine :eek: .So,with all the different car makers and their respective engines on offer answer me the following :-

1.Were you heavily influenced by engines on offer when considering skoda or did you think ooh,nice car first :cool:

2. :thumbup: Have Honda got the best engine in the world as claimed if not who has?

3. :thumbdwn: Who has the worst bag of spanners in your mind that stops you even going to look at their cars (even if it is an alleged 'quality' car)

Don't forget,not thinking about cars,just their powerplants (it's sunny outside and I don't want to do any work!)

i thought nice car!! amazing inside! then talked to the dealer and when he said the magic phrase '180bhp standard, 1.8ltr 20V TURBO' i had to be excussed at that point and have 5mins in the toilet to myself :naughty:

I was first drawn by the spec of the Fabia - what other small car has heated seats, climate control, etc, etc and a decent sized engine that's actually nice and punchy and also efficient. Obviously tracking down an Elegance spec with the 1.9TDI was the hard part and in the end I had to compromise on the interior colour. Still it's served me well and will probably be traded in, in the next few months anyway :D

It depends what you mean by best engines. Honda certainly make reliable, bulletproof engines and their VTECs are fantastic, but for sound you've got to look at the boxers or V8's. Nissan engines are also pretty indestructible too!

I won't look at Peugeots, Renaults or Citroens as they have terrible driving positions (well they did last time I looked at them last Feb). Wouldn't buy a Rover or Fiat because of the reputation which may or may not be deserved! ;)

Best engine: BMW 3.0 diesel.

It was defo the engine that sold me my Fabia - I had thought about saving up for a Golf TDi-PD before I heard about the vRS, but now I think I made the right decision! :thumbup:

(Would have said VTEC for best, but can't be doing with the 'nothing below 6000rpm' characteristics. May be OK in F1, but not in a road car if you ask me!)

I was attracted to the package. A cheap car to run, with nice handling, brakes and decent punch. That is how i bought mine. Not too concerned with looks etc etc......

Honda seem to have changed how i look at car brands a bit latley

dont think they could do wrong in my eyes

2.0 n/a nearly 200 bhp and ultra reliable :thumbup:

a lot of companys just seem really out dated latley in comparison

ford just seem boring these days engine wise

vauxhaul just seem to stick 2.2 or turbo lumps in everything

even the vag 1.8t stuff just seems old fasiond in comparison

(says me looking for a vrs still)

everybody seems more interested in trying to make good diesels :insane: :insane:

although if i had to have diesel one it would be vag no question

They're not dead below 6000rpm. They're just a typical normally asperated engine.

The Honda integra I had was 0-60 in 6.5 (from the book). OK to 20 was not that impressive (fiestas would beat you off the lights), but 25-60 was bloody quick. It was something like 0-25 first gear (twiddling thumbs), 25-42 first gear (VTEC on cam - hold on tight) , 42-60 2nd gear (wave goodbye - bloke in fiesta in right hand lane looking round thinking "i'm sure there was i car here i was going to overtake")

Back to the original question though, it's the engine for me.

Once when forced to take a ford for a company car I took the Mondeo V6 si over a 2 ltr Ghia. Engine over toys any time - especially in a Ford. The less time you're in it, the less chance of one of your mates seeing you :D

Well OK, fair enough, but my point was that to get the best out of them, you need to be running high revs, which, in day-to-day driving can tiresome. Fair enough, the turbo lag in my Fab is such that I'll need to change down to second if I need to go up a very steep hill in a 30 zone, but other than that, I can make very rapid progress at revs that don't feel like the engine is about to bust a blood vessel. Not doubting the performance of VTECs; just their everyday practicality!

bro has a civic type r and thats ok really below the 5Krpm vtec coming in stage, it does seem strange though since having the octy and having shove from as little as 2krpm.

Monkey Boys black vRS sold me the car and from the day i saw it i knew i'd got to have one. i didnt even test drive one until the day i bought mine, i just knew it was for me.

I remember thinking what a revelation the PD TDi was. It was by far the most refined diesel engine at the time it was released, and frugal - and the performance :eek: . I know it may have been superseeded by many better diesel engines (Hondas comes to mine, as does the new VAG 2.0 PD) but I've longed for one for some time. Now I have my Furby vRS and I couldn't be happier. What an engine. It really is a cracker. Never drope below 40mpg and it gets driven in a spirited manner. And half the time you'd never think it was a diesel... I love the relaxed way the performance is accessed so low down the rev range. Makes for effortless progress. ;)

But the rest of the package is just a bonus. :thumbup:

I was all ready to buy a clio 1.5dci 100bhp, even went to the showroom and asked if they could beat the 20% off I had with deposit in pocket. Loved the clio 172 cup but couldn't afford petrol or insurance!

Then my dad (good old dad) convinced me to have a look round the skoda garage and once I saw the fabia vrs I thought

bigger than the clio (I have family), faster than the clio, looks nicer than the clio (especially inside), its top of the range whereas the clio was just the 1.5, more reliable than the clio, no where near as many on the roads and it still does 50 to the gallen

then I thought, hell thats my car :D

and the rest as they say is history :thumbup:

For me it was the car alone! Fabia was a class winning car back in early 2001 when I first started looking into them.... And really wanted a 1.4 16v, but when the garage said they had a TDI on the forecourt in my colour, I snapped it up. :thumbup:

Not specifically the engine , but I had a list of "must-haves" as far as the engine goes.

I wanted a certain fuel economy , performance , reputation for reliability etc and there weren't that many manufacturers that passed the test.

After that it was a case of picking the car I liked most from that list and I ended up with a furby TDI estate as the favourite.

Then 2 hours before I was due at the garage to buy one I found an octy TDI for less than the furby so I bought that instead

For me the Fasbia VRS price/power/economy/quality was hard to beat. I can't honestly say it was the VAG tdi engine I was after but it does happen to be a powerfull one.

Hate to say it though, took a test in a Vauxhall Astra SH 150cdti and that showed how diesel technology has moved on since our 130pd engines were designed.

Very linear power delivery, almost zero lag and silky smooth. Fiat may have made some poor cars but this engine (a rebaged m-jet) is a peach. Now a Furby with that in it would be heaven.

It was then engine for sure. I needed a reliable car and a VW fitted the bill. I started looking at Golf's etc but I then realised that Skoda have same car, it was a sold for me.

This is suspect uses the same technology as the unit "powering" the 1996 1.4 Escort Encore I sold back in February. 8 valve pushrod engine, single point injection. No go whatsoever, sounded as coarse as P80 wet 'n' dry sanding paper and wasn't paticularly ecomonical either.

As for the Oct, car or engine, I got handed a copy of the Autocar feature by my brother and had to have a drive in one from there, my brother already owned a "W" plate 1.8T (150bhp) estate, so I appreciated it to be a decent car anyway.
