Should I change from a mk1 1.9 PD130 to a mk2 2.0 PD140?

As the title suggest's...... I'm considering changing from a 2004 mk1 hatch 1.9 PD130 to a 2006 mk2 estate 2.0 PD140.

What are the main points to consider?

From memory things of concern on the 2.0 PD140 are:

1. Turbo Failure

2. DPF

3. ESP/ABS

There are toher things but i'm looking at the main points to consider cost wise that are more than likely to need doing on an older car.

The main reason for considering changing is a larger car with child no 2 and if were going for an estate we might as well go for a mk2 :-)

Any comments or experiences you have would be appreciated.

I did pretty much what you are contemplating, but went for a slightly newer MkII - 2008. The only reason I changed was boredom with the old interior and worries over the age (8 years old).

I think the new car is much better styled and more comfortable to sit in etc, with a little more equipment as I went for an L&K again - I lost the sunroof but gained quite a lot else. Not sure I'd trade in a n L&K for anything less than an elegance.

However, the engine is no better in my experience - if anything the older one had better economy and felt more powerful (to me anyway), and the ride was more comfortable. That may be something to do with the bigger wheels and highish miles on my new one but the old one had high miles too.

There is no DPF on mine and not sure it came in till later??, and I've had no issues with turbo on either car or the ESP on the new one (seems I've been lucky to date - famous last words!). Its also worth running the aircon on the test drive and seeing how cold it becomes and how quickly - I believe there are some issues on the newer models from reading this and other forums.

Finally note the estate boot is not much bigger if that's your reasoning, unless perhaps you remove the false floor. But it is more convenient if you have a taller load, a dog for example, or like to keep the boot tidy using the space under the false floor.

I'm not sure if the ESP problem is only on the vrs but trying to cover all my options and then start looking around.

The boot not being much bigger is one of the things I was looking in to. The boot on the hatch is huge and is a major plus point but having had an estate before it is much more convenient and as this will be the family car thats the option we would prefer.

When our family expanded the last time around (1 to 2 kids), we moved up from an 02 Fabia Estate 1.9 TDI Comfort, to an 06 Octavia Estate Elegance 2.0 TDI (Sport Edition). We kept on the Fabia as a second car. I've owned the Octavia for the last 2 years covering around 20k.

In answer to your specific points:

1) On Turbo failure no hint of any turbo failure in my experience. If you look hard on the forums you will find a few, but in my judgement no more than in any other engine.

2) On DPF I'm pretty sure my model does not have a DPF?. For those that do it's the short journeys that seem to cause the most problem.

3) On ESP/ABS again no faults or issues to report here.

I have to say the MKII 2.0TDI is an extremely refined machine to drive (mind you I would say that since mine is currently for sale). The only problem I had was with the seatbelt warning indicator and alarm coming on when driving. I couldn't find the fault, but could treat the symptom by disconnecting the connection underneath the driver's seat. You'll find a post from me with photos on that on this site. That's it. Everything else is a dream and the boot is frankly cavernous. We took out the false floor as it was a bit of a pest really since the floor is level with the lip and shopping would fall out of the boot when opening it. I get an average of 48mpg and that's not with conservative driving either. The computer reads 565 miles to the next fill up when full.

A top machine, I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Just to add I'm not saying there is anything at all wrong with the 2.0 PD140 - as the last poster says, it is excellent. However in my case the 1.9 130PD was also a cracking engine, and in my opinion just as good, with its marginally better economy.

So perhaps don't expect a noticeable jump in engine quality from your current car but as its already so good, no issue there.

From personal experience, the 2.0 PD was a lovely thing to own.

It was my first diesel-engined car after a lifetime of relatively highly-strung Italian petrol cars and I was very pleasantly surprised with the amount of go - it'll pull pretty much any gear, anytime and was, to me a least a very economical vehicle in which to rack up the miles quickly but unobtrusively.

Yes, there are a couple things to be wary of as you undoubtedly already know, but in my very humble opinion it'd be a good choice.

ESP isn't the horror it was now there is a kit for it. Yes it'll be a big bill if it happens but not nearly as big as it once was.

There isn't a DPF on the 2.0 PD140 in the octy, so that won't be a problem.

The PD170 has a DPF, and there might be a 140 version out with a DPF, but most dont.

Only the Scout PD140 had a DPF in the Octavia, the front wheel drive PD140s were all DPF-free right through 2004 to 2010 (when the PD was replaced by the CR140).

ESP was only fitted as standard on vRS, Scout and L&K models. Elegance spec and below had a more basic ASR/ABS setup which doesn't usually give any trouble.

also don't exclude the 1.9tdi either as it offers better fuel economy and its a very reliable engine

I went from a mildy tuned pd130 04 octavia estate to a pd140 56 octavia estate.

Mk1 Octavia / PD130 Pro's

MPG - much better than the PD140

PD130 - seem pretty much bullet proof, although the EGR failed on it and the same has failed on my PD140

Torqey engine

Mk1 Octavia / PD130 Con's

Limited leg space in the rear for growing children on booster seats

breathless above 3,000rpm

Mk2 Octavia / PD140 pro's

Drive - feels much more grown up than the mk1 and feels to understeer less

much free'r reving than the pd130 (uber smooth with a shark map), Pre remap I almost didn't map it as the way it drove felt as quick as my mapped PD130

clutch seems much better suited in the pd140 compared to the pd130

Mk2 Octavia / PD140 con's

road noise (imo its noisier than the mk1)

possible turbo failure (mine started to scream and was replaced under warranty when I bought the car)

As others have said, if looking at the Elegance/L&K there is no DPF to worry about :whew: and I've not seen any ESP/ABS issues.

I rarely keep a car for long, infact, this mk2 Octavia is the longest I've ever owned a car (2years 2months) and can see myself keeping it for some time yet as I can't find anything else that ticks as many boxes as this and I can justify changing for.

I've had the ABS issue on my 06 PD140 Sport, but haven't had the turbo failure. with the wife driving we see 52 mpg regularly. I'd say go for it.
