New here and looking to buy VRS II shortly but would like advice!

Featured Replies

Hey everyone! Glad to be a member here on the forum. I am looking to buy a used VRS mk2 in Ireland so my choices are pretty limited. So far I have 2 that are in my price range, both have their ups and downs.

Case 1: 2011 Blue/White roof with around 12k miles on it. Fairly high price, however at first glance looks clean and tidy as expected. Supposedly it was owned by Dealer manager (and according to salesman not driven hard) which causes me a bit of a worry as it seems when they bed in if not worked properly can get glazed liners and hence excess oil usage, which I would like to avoid. Could however be a gem, but won't know that until further down the line.

Case 2: again 2011, but with Green/Black roof and 31k miles on it. Mainly motorway mileage, but main point is that the engine has had as far as I have been told/led to believe a rebuild done including new piston rings due to high oil usage. Now it is meant to be "within limits" although that can mean anything. Plus side is its a shed load cheaper as I think they are struggling to shift it. Also, the engine work was only completed in the last 2 months or so which should leave plenty of bedding in time to hopefully make sure the engine is a good'un.

Both will get full 1 year warranty from dealer, although I will try and push for a full 2 years from the time of work on the rebuilt engine for peace of mind. Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated guys! Thanks

2011 cars should be warranted until 2014? 3 years warranty in UK, not sure if same in Dublin?

I wouldn't worry about how it was run in - when they say managers car some of them drive harder than the sales people...

Ask about the warranty and as the engine is covered you'll be fine mate.

Agreed. How can they chop off 1 year of warranty with it being a 2011 model? I'd think the 3 years are standard worldwide. On the contrary, I'd probably ask for an extension of this warranty in the case of a car with a bad history. Doesn't necessarily mean I'd avoid it, I'd just push for that extra 1 year for peace of mind as said above.

Thanks for the replies! As far as I know they came out here with a 2 year unlimited mile warranty first, and now they are sold with 3 year warranty and a limited mileage (not sure on how many miles). Maybe I can push for a few cans of oil just in case :giggle:

case 1 sounds like a very good car and i say that it's your best bet with 12k on it that not a lot of mile and i would see if they would give you extra 1 year warranty on top good luck

Frankly I wouldn't trust the salesman an inch when it comes to how the car was driven! Unless they actually sat in the car all the time with the previous owner and are certified as only being able to tell the truth! A car run in as per the owners manual and then treated in the best possible way (Kenny Everett leg toss) is not always going to be the absolute gem, in my experience it is a lot about luck of the draw on how bored the production line was! The Dealer owned one, driven ever so gently will also have been used as a demo car and probably thrashed by every salesman in the dealership, as well as anyone given it as a lone car, at least that is how I can imagine it!

There are a few people on here who have had engine rebuilds and excess oil usage is a know problem for the 1.4 TSi engine. Don't see a rebuild as a serious issue as long as it has been carried out properly.

Not sure if the warranty issue is to do with it being an Irish car, I know that many European warranties used to be just two years while the UK was three. So possibly that or the dealer trying it on, worth pushing though gven the issues these engines have had.

Best bet is to have a good go over the cars and see which is in better condition and which is the better price and then push the dealer hard.

managers / sales team cars here in UK are used as "demostrators" for test drives

when my daughter went to test drive a monte carlo, she test drove a petrol monte which was the other sales guys motor, and a 1.6tdi normal which i believed was another staff members car

so just because it was a managers car and the manager drove it nicely don't take that as gospel, like the old "1carefull lady owner" and neglecting to mention her boy racer son who used the car at weekends

end of the day, so long as you get the relevant warranties take your pick,

i would still prob go for the manager one as the other already has a history, and most on here who have had rings replaced still go back for the whole engine months later when proved things are no better

i'd go for the first one... second one sounds like a problem... I've just had my 30k service done, and not put a drop in (oil) since the 20k service ;)

Great advie from you all, much appreciated. I will be going to have a look at the one which had the rebuild next week just to see it, and then will have to mull over my decision and start asking for deal sweeteners so to speak. Will let you know what the next move is! Really looking forward to joining the ranks....
