1.8 Oil consumption

Featured Replies

2010 1.8 TSi Octavia 2

My low oil warning lamp came on after about 2000 mls from service which had been done at around 7000 mls.I am the second owner so not sure why service was done at 7000 mls. Is this oil consumption normal - seems v high to me? My previous car a Saab 9000 never used oil between services. Love the car ideal Saab replacement, faster, quieter, more economical better equipped and automatic :)

Mine doesn't use any oil. I've only topped up once using less than half a litre at 6 months. Car now just over 4 years old and on 22k miles. It's had 2 variable services.

I had the same thing I just keep a check on it once in a while.

The problem being with me is I live on a hill so can't check it at home so have to take it to work or the station car park, leave it there, where it's 99% flat and then do a test for the oil level after it has gone cold & just had a small amount if required.

I would hardly call adding oil to a car worrying, it's bound to use some.

at the service they may have not put quite enough in

Uses almost no oil between annual services

How often do you check the oil level or are you relying on the oil level warning light to warn you when you need to top up? If the latter, are you aware that the light comes on when, to quote the Owner's Manual, 'the quantity of oil in the engine is probably too low'.

I check mine every weekend when I top up the screenwash and check the tyre pressures.

Common issue on the TSi engines mine does around 2k before it eeds topping up.

I think it is all dependant on how you drive it.

I drive mine hard most of the time.

It is 21 months old at the moment and has got 87,000 miles on the clock so far.

I put 4.5 litres in in the first year (did 14000 between services)

I put 3.5 litres in in the second year (did 13000 between services)

I drove the car fairly hard but the missus drove it very lightly. It was doing a 50 miles commute across country roads and a little stop start driving at either end of the commute. It also had a weekly 65 mile blast up the motorway so its fair to say the car had a 'average' driving style and conditions applied.

Only this car and a petrol 04 Fabia have I ever had to put a drop of oil in between services. Best have been my Fords (one petrol and one 2.2 diesel. They never drank a drop)

1.8 TSi takes 4.7 Litres of oil and the service fills exactly that. I add probably 500ml annually to the engine, before its next service, just to keep it at the top of the dipstick.
