Tyres Noise Octavia A5 FL

Featured Replies

Hello,

regards from Serbian BriSkoda member.

I got new car in 2009 with 17" Pegasus alloys and Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres (something like that).

I have TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitor System) and all the time I was checking tyre pressure and everything was OK.

After I passed 15.000 km, noise started from all tyres and it was not possible to drive anymore.

I contacted local Bridgestone office, and guy from office came to check tyres, and he told me that main problem is tyre pressure, and that Skoda doesn't propose proper pressure as all tyres lower than 50 (in my case R17 225/45) must be fulfilled with pressure at least 2.5 bar. He refused warranty because of that.

I contacted Skoda importer and they changed me all 4 tyres to Michelin Primacy HP.

All the time I checked pressure and balanced tyres and car trap.

I have winter set also, and I drive it without any trouble.

Now after next 15.000 I heard noise again.

My car is not in warranty anymore, and I can't contact importer. My problem now is that if I buy new tyres, I guess same problem will come again in 15.000km. I spoke with service guys from VW importer and from Skoda importer here, and they told me that VW and Skoda had a problem with noise and 17" tyres.

Does anyone know how to solve my problem?

BR, Sasa.

Do the tyres appear to be worn evenly at 15,000 km's?

Some owners have complained of 'saw toothing' on the Octavia, although mainly on the vRS (try a search).

When the tyres 'sawtooth' it is difficult to tell at first simply by looking at the tyre tread, you need to rub the palm of your hand over the tread to feel the odd shape.

If this is the problem it is due to the suspension geometry and will need realigning.

my tyres made alot of noise til i had the tracking done,i had a before and after readout and the settings were massively out..it was only the rear tyres though

They'd be out of balance if out of shape, and eight tyres (espicially Bridge) to go out of shape would be unlucky. .

If its the geometry that's mis-shaping the tyres then it doesn't matter what brand they are.

The problem occurs after a significant number of miles and not from new so it is likely to be the way in which the car is set-up that is causing the issue over time.

Alignment issues are often reported on Octavia's from new.

Worth checking as said wheel alignment first before buying more tyres.

I've just gone from 15,s to 17,s and don't notice any tyre noise difference. I do have 2 budgets on the rear droning but will replace them. My Kumhos on the front are totally quiet as were all the tyres on my 15,s.

Hello, thanks for answers.

As I told, I have winter set, and every six month I change tyres winter-summer, and as I did this in official Skoda service,

every time they were set my suspensions and aligned them to Skoda default values.

I am thinking that maybe they have a problem in service with laser machine for suspension geometry.

I will try to check in other service before I will buy new set.

I will check tyres with my hands, I know what do you mean, as it was a problem first time.

i had the same problem from new and 2 sets of tyres when back in the uk i had my rear tracking checked and changed to the new setting it quietened down a bit but still there. As soon as i fit my 205/55/16 winter tyres theres no noise at all. i had a set of 205/40/17 summer tyres back on and no noise so im thinking the width of the tyre seems to affect it.

Yes, I also used 15" set of winter tyres without problem, next winter I used 16" without noise. But after I changed tyres to 17" I got noise again.

I really don't have idea how to solve this.

Poor geometry normally does not mis-shape a tyre, most caes of this are poor tyre's.

I doubt it's Sawtoothing on summer or all season tyres as this mainly effects mud & snow tyres when they are new much more noticable on 4x4 Disco's.
