Stream MP3, upgrade to Bolero (+MDI?)

Featured Replies

Boo!

Just bought a Bolero (PART NO. SK-1Z0 035 156 F apparently) to replace the Stream MP3, in my '07 Elegance.

Thought I'd ask a few questions up front:

Other than the facia, which I suspect I'll have to replace, should the unit be Plug'n'Play (once the code has been entered)? Or am I going to need some coding? (If so, what coding will I be asking my friendly VCDS coder to do?)

Will I get the CANBus battery-drain problem?

Thinking, whilst the unit is out and the dash is apart....of installing an MDI into the glove box (maybe top touch box). Have seen many cables for less than a tenner on eBay. are about 6" long, with a 90 degree connector at one end and USB at the other. Will these do the job? (Can't find a picture of the back of a Bolero though)

There also seem to be a few MDI boxes that mount above.below my OE boot-changer. Will a bog standard USB extension so the job from front to back? (Having it in the boot isn't essential though.)

I have been told the Bolero should drive the OE boot-changer (giving 12 discs in total), is this right?

The changer in the h/u itself: 6 x MP3 cds? (That would be a lotta Pink Floyd!)

Rear parking sensors: again Plug'n'Play? Front ones supported? (another part of the wish list)

Can't think of anything else, although all suggestions and observations greatfully received.

Reasons for Bolero over Columbus (other than cost):

Sat Nav not required - have a Samsung Galaxy S2 for that (Live route adaptation)

Whilst the idea of 30gb of MP3 is appealing, again the SGS2 has that, with the addition of the MDI port, that should be more than enough to be getting on with. (SBS2 should take 64gb MicroSD)

Not overly interested in MaxiDot integration (MaxiDot is also on the wish list) as the SGS2 speaks the navigation, and I know what music I'm listening to ;) ;)

Thanks guys :)

Did you get an answer to this questions? I want to upgrade my stream to bolero, however, I can't be bothered coding this and that. Is it pull stream out put bolero in? Or do I need dealer to link it to the cars brain?

Depends on your canbus. Some are plug and play, some aren't. The parking sensor display and climate won't work after the upgrade but personally I wasn't that bothered. I could hear the sensors and I knew when it was getting warm ! Do a search on Bolero on here and you should find the answers you're looking for.

Yeah, oddly there was a long thread about it in the Octavia II section, seems no-one reads the ICE section. ;-)

Basically:

Yes, just plug and go (you'll need the code)

The dash surround from the Stream/MP3 fits perfectly

If you've got Stream MP3, the aux works ok too.

If you've got a pre-facelift, there'll be no integrated display of the climatronic or parking sensors (climatronic is just duplication any way, and parking sensors.....well you really just listen to the beeping.)

(You don't get them as the PDC is different between Pre & FL, as is the climatronic unit)

Also no volume lowering when engaging reverse. (The best I've thought of so far is to link reverse to the phone-mute)

As you look at the back of the unit, the aerial connects to the right-hand socket.

Mine does control the boot-changer too (12 discs in total now!)

Didn't bother with MDI, as it's over £100 for the parts, and I have an SD card and the SGS2 connected in, so MDI seemed redundant really.

Apparently the CANBus issue is when the fan remains active when you've taken the keys out the ignition. There are various versions of CANBus and upgrade that will fix this. I checked mine the poor man's way (not having VCDS).........listen to the unit when it's on (but turn the volume right down), you should hear the fan. Switch the car off and take the keys out.......see what happens. Mine went dead quiet straight away. It's not a hard and fast rule, and I've not left the car for any long period of time (2 days so far), but I have no idea how long it takes for the problem to manifest itself either.

Other than that, straight in, no problems.

My stream never has displayed reversing sensors and the climatronic temp is displayed on the 2 smaller Lcds so it's not needed either. I do have the aux port so that good it will, work.

I noticed a couple boleros going cheap n eBay was maybe going to put in a sneaky bid, but wanted to confirm it was plug and play which it is. So I'll go place it in my watch list.

Far better visually than the horrible stream appearance

Thanks

Yeah, I think there's one going in Newbury:

http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2649

......seems cheap at the moment too!

And yes, looks far better than the Stream when installed.

Make sure you get the Octavia one though, iirc the Superb one is very different in shape.

Anything else I need other than the unit? Folk mention a fakra splitter? But you mention using the right side socket?

Yep that's the one I'm watching

Not sure what the Fakra is for to be honest. Apparently the Bolero can use two aerials and chose which has the strongest signal and use that. The pre-fl only has one aerial, so there's not much choice. It was suggested that the right socket is used in another thread on this. I suspect the right socket is the one that's connected to the "carried over" aerial from the pre to the FL. IIRC Bolero wasn't a pre-FL option. If you split the single connection into both sockets, I don't see anything being gained.

.....although there is always the option that I'm wrong.

Unless your car has two aerials, you will get an 'Open Circuit' fault from the aerial socket that is not being used. It will only have two aerials if a Bolero, Columbus or similar HU was factory fitted.

Nothing to worry about really.

There are mixed answers as to whether the splitter actually solves this problem or not. All it might do is fool the Bolero into thinking both aerial sockets are in use and clear the open circuit fault.

It won't do anything to improve reception as they are essentially running from the same aerial.

All it might do is fool the Bolero into thinking both aerial sockets are in use and clear the open circuit fault.

......and let's be honest about this bit, the open circuit error/fault doesn't show on the display, unless you go holding buttons down for "extra" menus. ;) ;) So far Radio 2 is working a treat!

KB: why did I plug it into the right-hand socket and not the left?

All you'll see in the hidden menu is that antenna 1 is not connected.

VCDS scan will show 'open circut'. Not really worth worrying about.

Right is FM, Left is AM/FM and has a weaker signal.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks :)

Whilst we're here: What's the VW 'name' for a Bolero? I know the Columbus RNS 510. The closest I've seen for Bolero is RCD 510? Is this right?

And

Can the brightness of the screen be "extra" adjusted through VCDS? Mine seems quite dark, it does dim with the dash-dim, but "normal" just doesn't seem bright enough or as bright as the pictures I've seen.

I lost out my eBay bids :-(

Hi,

I have the standard Stream Head until on a Skoda Octavia Elegance 55 plate. If I replace the head unit with one that has Bluetooth and DAB (JVC for example), will I lose all functionality of the parking sensors or just the on screen graphics (I know that I will lose the graphic of the Climate control - assume that it will still work!!), sorry don't know how the head unit is connected so may seem a daft question!!

thanks

Hi, and welcome aboard!

Yes, you'll lose the graphic from the parking sensors and volume control of the beeping, but you will still get the beeping. After a couple of days you don't miss the graphic, and I mute the stereo down manually now. The climate control will still work happily too :)

Hi all,

Right, had the car scanned the other day and got this error:

The fault: Is this just a 'VW' way of saying that I'm only using one aerial?

That's not the fault caused by missing aerial!

But I don't know what it is! Being intermittent confirms its not the aerial (although that would be an 'open circuit' fault as well).

Hi,

Sorry, no plans to sell the Stream MP3. I kinda like Octavias, so will take the Bolero with me when I change.

Cheers

  • 1 month later...

I recently bought a Bolero upgrade for my 2004 Octavia MK2. The battery kept running out due to the CAN BUS Gateway issue (old version), I ordered a replacement/upgrade from Ebay, after doing hours of work and I now have no problems at all.
