Funny heater/recirculation behaviour

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First post here as I only recently bought a 03 Plate Fabia 1.9tdi Comfort! Has been a great car so far over the first 1500 miles!

However I have a query.

When I bought it I knew the heating controls were a bit dodgy (and got a good chunk of money knocked off to compensate). I want to try and diagnose exactly what the problem is before I start replacing parts randomly!

The current behaviour is:

- Occasionally the heater will be stuck on hot and will not turn back to cold

- Occasionally the heater will be on cold, giving out cold, and then change itself to hot

- The recirculation button sometimes does nothing (including no light)

- The recirculation button sometimes works (with light) for a short period, before turning itself off and not re-engaging.

The aircon works and does give out icy cold air, apart from when one of the above is occurring. Switching off the fans and waiting for ~20 seconds normally fixes the issue (of heat, anyway).

So, my questions are:

- Having a read around I presume this is one of the motors controlling the flaps in the dashboard?

- Are the recirculation and heater flap motors separate or the same?

- If separate, is it likely both are faulty? Or could it be the control unit?

- Some people seem to suggest cleaning out dust from behind the small grill on the heater unit would fix the problem. Is this applicable here?

- Would this sort of fault be diagnosable by a VAGcom code reader?

- Finally, if the motors do need replacing, what is the best guide/manual/book etc. for dismantling the dashboard? I did read the motors are accessible once the glovebox has been removed, but that more of the dash has to be removed to actually replace them.

I've read some threads and everyone seems very friendly and helpful here! I hope somebody will have had the same experience as me! Since buying my Fabia I have already had to do the 'typical' leaky rear door seals!

Cheers,

Oli

it souldnt be recirc issue, just go flap motor, its major polo issue too, easy to get to from passenger side under dash i believe

havent got a link to a guide for you sorry

flap motor is a glovebox out and simple to get to i think you will find, that will solve most of the temprature issues for you, got to do the same to swmbo's vrs

Thanks for all the help so far.

Can anybody confirm part numbers?

I have 1J0907511 for the V154 recirculation flap motor and 6Q0907511 for the V68 air temperature control. Do these sound right to everyone?

Oli, did you fix this?

Yep. Without replacing a single part...

VCDS? Big hammer? :)

I actually took the motors out - dismantled and cleaned the motors, then reconnected them and played with the buttons until it worked! I've been meaning to get someone with VCDS to have a look at it and recalibrate them/clear the error codes but I haven't had a chance all summer!

How easy (or not!) is this to do? Mine is stuck on recirc and cannot get it off, VCDS says it is the V154 recirc motor and rather than replace, I would like to try and free it up...

Thanks in advance!

The recirculation motor is DEAD EASY.

Take the glove box out, take the fan cover off, pop it out.
