Gear selection problem.

Featured Replies

Hi ya people. Would like some help with a gear selection problem if possible.

My 57 Octavia estate 2.0 tdi pd vrs has developed a fault with gear selection. When I get the car up to about 60 mph I can no longer select 5th or 6th gear but can drop down a little mph and they work fine again - the car goes into 3rd when trying select 5th and 4th when selecting 6th.

I have also had the same problem with much less frequency and consistency when pulling away in 1st (3rd) or trying for 2nd (4th) gear.

Any ideas and suggestions appreciated.

Not sure about this one but I know thelinkage on my vrs had the same problems. The gear stick also never sat centrally when in neutral. Felt stiff like it was stuck no matter how much force was applied it wouldn't budge. It's a cheap fix less than 100 bucks. I'm not too clued up on the gearbox/clutch internals to advise possible cause.

Ok, Thanks anyway. I'll give it a mention when it goes in.

I have similar problem on my '08 1.9 Elegance

Most of the time gearchange is fine but then it is very difficult. When you wiggle gearlever side to side to check you are in neutral it is very tight & only seems to move across half the gate. Selecting 1st & 2nd is easy, 3rd & 4th can be difficult, 5th very difficult. No predicting when it will happen, one day OK, horrible the next.

I'm hoping just a problem with the external linkage, need to crawl under for a look. Be interesting to hear what the outcome is with Morph's car.

Right all sorted now. I had some big worries but it turned out to be a few small parts. A bush was missing from the gearbox linkage, there was also some wear on the mounting. 3 Parts and Labour £60.
