Am i not making my tyres last long enough?

Featured Replies

So, its time for me to replace my front tyres once again. Last time I got 4 rainsport 2s and I've been really pleased with them. Dry grip is maybe slightly less than Proxes which were on before and wet grip is fantastic. It's been 10k since i had them fitted and they're pretty much on the wear indicators now and I can feel that there is less grip there than a few weeks ago. I drive briskly a lot of the time. Not crazy but could probably be a little nicer to my tyres around roundabouts and stuff. So is 10k a decent innings for a set of RS2s? Im probably going to replace them with 2 more as i've not had any problems and i'm sure my last set of toyos lasted less than that. Is it something to do with the front end weight of these cars that means they eat front tyres?

Also, i had my car mapped at shark a few days ago an i think I can feel the start of clutch slippage. The car is at 169k and as far as I'm awake has never had the clutch done. I can feel something somewhere between 2-3k in second on dry roads but cant quite tell if its cluch or tyres, not noticed it in the higher gears yet, but dont really have chance to stretch the legs in 5th and 6th very often. When i replace the clutch I will use the OEM parts and do the flywheel at the same time. Is it a difficult job to do myself? I've done wishbone bushes and lots of other stuff on the car before but never a clutch. and how much would you allow for a clutch/flywheel change in parts and plus labour if i go to a garage?

cheers, Pete

Mine's not mapped and I get through a pair of Proxies on the front in about 12k. Rears can be almost double that though.

Yeah, my rears are still fine. only had the map for a few days so im expecting this next set of tyre may last even less time :/

Used to get about 6-7k out of my Rainsport 2's when I had my Colt CZT. Your doing better than I did.

Front wheel drive, plenty of power/torque/braking and fairly heavy on the nose. Add to this the RS2s appear to have a fairly soft tread and they're going to wear quickly.

As above I would say 10k is good, I've just bought some and was expecting about 6 or 7k miles. I used to have a Volvo T5 and that could chew a set of front tyres in 4k miles if you weren't careful.

I managed to coax 10k from a set of Toyo T1-R Proxes, mostly motorway mileage

My girl friends car used up some yoko's in 2.5k... damn stretched tyres lol.

My toyos usually last around 9k but it all depends on the driving you do if your driving brisk and dont use motorways much i'd say 10k is good.

Got 7k out of my last set of fronts lol so I'd say you did alright there!

I have had my fronts on for around 30k miles. 80% of that is motorway though..

They will need changing nextweek IMHO

I've had my Toyo T1R's for 19k on the front now, I honestly can't believe how they have lasted that long. That's including two Brisky track sessions as well!

I am running 215's though, and the shoulders have held up much better than the 205's last time.

Dont the 215 looks like crap tho? Like grandad spec? :p

Yeh massively. I also like to drive sat about 2 cm from the steering wheel, bouncing the car off the limiter, whilst slipping the clutch :hi::happy:

How wide are them wheels tho? I assumed you were on about 215 on a sandard rim lol as that what the OP was referring to. Judging by that picture you have a subtle stretch going on.

I run 215 T1-R's on my standard Ibiza 16inch wheels. They are 215/40's iirc. They "look" fine.

That said, you above arent trying hard enough. I destroyed a set @ Cadwell Park, barely did over 500 miles in total... Then again I was running 1 minute 45 second lap times....

Arent them wheels 7j? apposed to vRS 6.5j?

215 on a 7" is sound though. I used to have 195s on my 16x7 golf anni wheels and they we fine. a tiny bit of stretch but within the manufacturers recommendations for width.

Thanks for the advice everybody, I've decided that i dont think my clutch is actually slipping and that I'm going to order a new set of rainsports imminently.

oh yeah 215 on a 7j is perfect personally id run 205 or 195 as i prefer a subtle stretch. Just dont want anyone reading this and assume each person has the vrs 6.5j wheel because 215 would look shocking on them

Agreed. They would look cack.

Gonna order my rs2s tomorrow I think :)

I was referring to the experiences I have had between two tyre sizes for the same tyre brand. Therefore what I have found is the wider tyre has suited my driving better than the narrower one.

Also was only pointing out that I have managed a decent amount of miles out of a set of Toyo's which most people seem to assume are so soft that they won't last long. Anyone can destroy a set of tyres in no time if they want to, but that's not the point.
