What to clean a diesel engine with?

Featured Replies

I'm after a bit of advice. There's nothing wrong with my engine as far as I'm aware, but it is my first diesel in about ten years. The Honda 2.2 unit is very smooth and quite un diesel like in both sound and it's willingness to rev.

However, as I haven't had it from new and I like to think the engine is running as cleanly and smoothly as possible, I'd appreciate people's opinions. The car has just had a major service with all genuine Honda parts/fluids and the mechanic seemed to think it was in good health. Is there anything you'd recommend on the market that I could put through the fuel tank or oil that any of you use and swear by? Halfords is full of little bottles, but what do you diesel boffins use?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Nothing but good quality fuel.

STP Complete system cleaner (Diesel). My mate swears by it and the petrol version did miracles for my fabia and my mam's astra.

My vRS was run on nothing but Optimax then V-Power. I guess a few tanks of good quality diesel will pass some cleaning agents through the system which'll help.

I'll have a look into that one, thanks.

Forte diesel treatment & a good few tanks of vpower diesel

There's a lot of murmurings surrounding Miller's diesel treatment too... I personally dump a load of Redex through every 5k or so.

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty convinced that a car like this will have been run on all sorts of crud over the years. I'll treat it to some good stuff and look into the chemicals mentioned.
