Can someone explain to me what the difference between a diesel turbo and a petrol turbo is? As in, could i use a garrett t25 (for example) on my fabia tdi? If not, why not?

I think that makes sense lol

Cheers

Luke

It may be to do with manifold temperatures mainly. Petrols get a bit hotter so the turbo has to deal with that...

Might be some other technical specs different that I'm not aware off but sure someone else will :-)

I was thinking it was a boost related difference? I dunno if diesels run more than petrols or anything like that.

Its just you can pick up a decent garrett turbo easily whereas the pd130/pd150's are becoming harder and harder to source on a lesser budget due to demand

Diesels run higher boost pressures. . .other than that i dunno much tbh, the pd turbo are built onto the manifold. . So i don't think its as simple as just replacing the turbo unit itself. . I dunno if the petrol equivalent is the same?. .

I knew youd have to get a custom manifold made up, thats not a problem. Just wondered if it could work? And if so, would it be efficient?

Don't forget, turbos for diesels use VNT mechanism to control the boost, where as petrols generally don't because temps are too high for it to be reliable.

As above. That's the main reason. A petrol turbo won't have a VNT mechanism on and will have fixed vanes and then use a pressure release valve to dump exess pressure.

In short. It wont work!

Fairly sure a 911 turbo works on variable vane turbos

Turbos that don't have a VNT will have a wastegate on the exhaust side, that makes the exhaust by-pass the turbo, controlling the turbo speed and therefore the boost pressure. They are normally part of the turbo but can be external. Both petrol and diesels can have these. Petrol turbo engines also do have a dump valve on the intake side.

Just asked my guru and he said yes

You will need a manifold and an exhaust and then mapping

But the boost will be high up in the rev range

The main problem will be space under the bonnet

good luck

jabbasport do manifolds for garret turbos for the TDi engine

Do we know what model turbos they use?
