Skoda 110R - what laws/regulations must a custom build meet? An ytips/advice please

Featured Replies

I have always loved the look of the Skoda 110R (especially the racing 130RS), but the standard engine/brakes etc etca re a little 'boring'. I have often thought about stripping a 110R and putting in some kind of V6, modern brakes, gearbox etc. Really i'd like a classic body with a modern rocket car underneath (maybe using an Alfa as a donor car).

Now, my problem is that over here in Slovakia it would be absolutely impossible to legalise/register and thus use on the roads as it is a beauracratic nightmare to even put 19" alloys on a Superb! An alternative I was thinking about was building a custom car (LHD) and having it legalised/registered/insured in the UK and simply bring it back on UK number plates and fully legal. As I understand such custom builds are possible in the UK, is this correct? I have dual UK and Slovak citizenship and grew up i the UK so this shouldn't be a problem.

I would very much appreciate any tips and advice on how I could go about this and what regulations/standards/etc a custom build in the UK must meet. At this early stage i'm just reseraching possible avenues. Thanks

yes, in essance, you can build any car you like... if from scratch you would go through "single vehical approval" wouldnt need to meet EU regs on noise ect...

if you used a registered chassis, you could carry on using that reg plate ect, just notify the changes :) (big V6's in polos ect)

if you are somewhere inbetween, it can be registered as a "q" plate, and used as normal...

NOTE: I am very far from an expert, the above is just what "memory serves" and may be out of date, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!

Its the rebuilding older cars bit that may affect you

Sent from my Galaxy S2 not a Crapple!

I'm pretty sure it's points based and you have to keep enough of the original vehicle (or replacement parts the same spec) to keep the reg number and ID. Although recently it's changed to something like chassis and two other major components from the base vehicle.

Otherwise it's a "bitsa" which often end up Q plated.

It gets discussed a lot on Land Rover forums as they are so easy to take apart and put back together again using the bits from various vehicles.

An IVA test will apply if you modify the chassis in ANY way, including altering engine, transmission or suspension mountings.

When I spoke to VOSA earlier in the year this was not the case.

Non structural mountings for the engine and gearbox could be modified.

This area is such a minefield and depends largely on what you are doing to the vehicle.

The best thing to do IMO is for the original poster to contact VOSA and ask the question. Because you'd have to be mad to start a project like this without knowing if it'll go through a check afterwards.

This is what I did when looking at building a 4x4 Fabia.

What these people don't know about modifying old cars and getting them legal in the UK isn't worth knowing.

Very willing to help too.
