Tyre noise, Asking for a favour........Please.

Featured Replies

My 11 plate Octavia Vrs TSi DSG is very noisy when driving, the noise alters on different road surfaces so I am Assuming in the Dunlop tyres on the Front.

When I bought the car the front tyres were worn but not Illegal so the dealer wouldn't replace them.

I have fitted Toyo proxes 4 (225/40/18) to the front wheels, put them onto the rear and the rears are now on the front.

The inside edges of the Dunlops Sport Maxx GT, now on the front, had worn and started to " Saw tooth "

They have covered about 9.5 K miles and are roughly half worn but they are very noisy.

The car stops in a straight line and if I select neutral and let the hand brake off on a slight slope the car rolls forward so I don't think it's anything to do with the brakes.

I have had the 4 wheel Alignment done at ABC and every thing is spot on.

So I assume it's the tyres on the front

Can anyone local lend me there front wheels ( no Dunlop tyres please ) so I can go for a quick drive to see if it is the tyres. Doesn't matter if there Zeniths or Neptunes but need to be 225/40/18 and would have to be quite local to me

I don't want to but new tyres if it's not the tyres making the noise

Thanks Andy ( beer tokens already in pocket )

Wouldnt it be easier for you to swop your tyres front to rear & see if the noise goes/improves......it does sound like tyres to me,my falkens were noisey & ive just replaced them & the noise has gone.If the tyres are sawtoothed then im sure thats your problem.

I can guarantee it's the fronts you've swapped round. Not only do you have the Dunlops still on (which are rubbish and noisy anyway) but if they're sawtoothed they'll also be mis shaped like a 50p and rough as hell on smoother road surfaces with a "wha wha wha" noise especially at around 30mph. I had the same issue until last week when the rears (PS3's) were replaced with new F1's at ABC and Skoda did a free 4WA for me as the previous one they'd (not) done ruined the back tyres.

Why do you think Dunlop are rubbish and noisy? A Dunlop will produce slightly more nosie than a Toyo, but its rare for a Dunlop to go out of shape unlike a Michelin, which really suffer with this, together with other things.

ps. Your new F1's are........Dunlop's, but they have Goodyear on the sidewall. .

I found the Dunlop to be noisy and not that great in the wet but I had them when I got the car and the weather was cold so they wouldn't have been at their best. Not had the F1's on that long yet to comment much but it's funny you say that as they aren't that quiet either I've found. The PS3's were much better in that regard.

Worst for noise though was the Rainsports. They were terrible for that and picked up stones too easily too due to the tread pattern.

The PS3's are more of a comfort tyre. .

I found the dunlops supplied on vrs octavias to be shockingly bad. I was relieved when my new octavia vrs had continentals fitted from factory. I found the dunlops had poor grip.

Might explain it. The F1's aren't unbearable, just not as quiet as I'd hoped having replaced sawtoothed rears (a day before getting a 4WA done). Yeah the wha wha noise has gone but it's not super silent like it was when I replaced the sawtoothed rears with PS3's last time. But hey ho - they're otherwise ok.

Might give the Dunlops another go in the future now I know this.

You should have pm me Andy . You could have put my wheels on with vredestein . i am off till next Friday

having replaced sawtoothed rears (a day before getting a 4WA done).

Friend I know at Bridgestone maintains you should have your 4WA done with you old tyre's fitted, as after it's been jacked the car is unsettled. .

Hi I had a similar problem on my 2010 vrs.

The noise developed from 10k to 16k and really sounded like a worn bearing.

The noise came from both rear tyres 'saw-toothing' They were Dunlops.

The rears were only half worn but I had to replace and the noise vanished.

I had the car 4 wheel adjusted but tyre places use different settings from the dealers.

The dealer had to redo the settings and I got a partial refund from the dealer/Skoda on the tyre replacement.

Get the correct settings from the dealer.

Job sorted thanks. new tyres on the front on Monday then there will be new tyres all round.

if you go to somewhere with a hunter rig it will be correct .the setting from skoda can be within tolerance but can be within pointing in each direction
