Possible bonnet shake

Featured Replies

Morning all!

Since I had grill and fog light surround's painted by a body shop a few months ago I have developed a really annoying rattle at motorway speed.

Since then i have removed each fog light surround and the grill 1 at a time to make sure it's not them rattling, it's still there!

Last weekend I had a spare 10 so took it all off again and checked all the little clips and all are intact still, so I know it's not that.

I then lent on the bonnet after I had closed it and there was a little play in it and could press it down.

So I'm guessing the very slight movement I get I shouldn't have, so I had a checked and all bolts are tight and don't look like they've been taken out recently and catch feels nice, tight and secure.

Can anyone suggest anything I can do to fix this as I use the M4 a fair bit and it's driving me mad!

you could adjust the catch and lower it to give it a tighter hold. does the bonnet close to catch really easy or does it need to be dropped a bit or pushed? if its really easy then this could cause it, loosen catch bolts it should be able to adjust. Mine wont so i have duct tape around my bonnet part to take up the slack

I never drop the bonnet, always lower it and press down for it to catch. It does still feel tight IMO but will take a look in the Haynes to adjust as you suggest... cheers dude

no probs, you could always try the rubber bonnet stops at either side, sometimes these raise and lower if you twist em.

Why did they need to do anything with the bonnet

other than open it and unbolt the grille?

why do garages do half the crap we dont tell em too? its a mystery

This rattle started after I took it all apart myself.... The body shop just had the parts to paint.

I Was just using process of elimination to try and find the problem before I asked for help!

I would of said twist the rubbers on the bonnet

you could adjust the catch and lower it to give it a tighter hold.

The only thing with that is the shut lines might be lower than the wings.

I just put a bit of tape on the catch to tighten it up sorted it.

I agree, twist the rubbers to align, this takes the slack out of the movement.

If you did not adjust or remove the locking mechanism, you may have accidentally altered the rubber depth stop(s).
