Flashing Engine Management Light & Judder HELP!

Featured Replies

hi guys im looking for some help and advice. over the last week or so my car (06 Vrs TFSI) has been running a bit ruff and felt like it had a flatspot

between about 2 - 3K RPM.

But on the way home today i was on a dual carrigeway doing about 50mph in 6th and under gentle acceleration from low revs it started to judder rather

violently and then the E.M.L started flashing i slowed and changed down and it went off. The fault can be replicated in 4th and 5th aswell.

has any one any idea what it could be or had any experience of a similar fault?

thanks in advance

possible coil pack? is the judder similar to it running on 3 cylinders?

it could be but the idle isnt any worse than usual. But thats the first thing i thought either that or the clutch but its only got 59k on the clock. how would you check if its the coil pack? vcds?

thanks for the reply

Had exactly same fault, which coincided with rough idle and low mpg and seemed to get worse over a month or so. Thought it might be pcv valve related so was going to change that, but the car was in for a routine service before I had a chance to. 6yr service included sparkplugs, air + oil filters and the car came back completely cured of the judder.

(still not had a chance to swap the pcv out!)

I had this. Coil changed, came back. Entire coil pack changed, came back. One dealer suggested a new ECU but another wanted to try a new injector first. When they went to change that, they saw that the intake valves were coked to **** and the valves were sticking. Engine taken apart, head sent to VW to be machined, £2k bill.......

If you have a google about, carbon deposits on the intake valves are not wholly uncommon on the VAG TFSi engines.

I started off hoping it wouldn't be something expensive like an ECU and ended up wishing it had been so cheap......

:(

doesnt sound like clutch to me, sometimes the coil packs mess around at certain revvs or under load so could be one or all. Im not sure on vcds im kinda old school but may be worth a try.

If its an ignition coil there'll be a fault code for misfire on cylinder x.

There is a recall on the substandard coil packs used in the Octy/Golf/etc - has yours had it?

thanks for all the replies. i changed the pcv valve when my diverter valve split. mr_awol that sounds terrible, i have read of the carbon deposit problem before

and i hope it isnt that. i have got the skoda 1 year used car warranty on my car. has anyone ever tryed claiming on it or is it not worth the paper its written on.

thanks

UPDATE - The car is booked into bickertons in sheff on thursday so should hopefully find out what the fault is. whilst on the phone he checked for any outstanding recalls but there wasnt any so im guessing mines had it done before my 8 months of ownership . thanks

i had similar problem.....changed ingnition coils ...its sweet now

I'm hoping it is something as simple as that, Fingers crossed

if you have enough money in bank for fixing carbon deposits itll be a coil pack. if you can only afford a coil pack itll be an engine rebuild. at least thats how it goes for me.

Had a quick look at this online and unless i'm missing summat, there appears to be a few specifics:

1) everything i've read refers to the 2.0, NOT seen the 1.8 mentioned yet

2) If you're doing over 2000rpm for 20+ mins this appears to help: seems it's more limited to those who do short runs and not let it have a good blast.

Can anyone confirm either/both of those? (to be honest, i'm not even sure if my 1.8t is even linked to this issue cos I struggle to get someone to tell me whether the 1.8 is a tfsi or a tsi!)

Less than 2k revs? Doesn't sound like my driving ;)

In honesty mine came on within a few months of my littlun being born. I think maybe I was taking it a bit too easily in the later stages of the wife's pregnancy and obviously once the baby was born.

Whilst I still had the car I used to give it a thrash now and then - at least once a month. This was on the advice I found online to protect the engine from further build ups.

As for 1.8 vs 2.0 I don't hunk it matters. It seems to affect direct injection engines generally, although the bigger ones more - not just VAG engines though, apparently Porsche have a similar issue......

To be fair, I've heard of quite a few local mechanics who've been asked to look at various old dear's poorly running, shopping-only-&-weekend car. They've taken if for a right beasting up the dual carriageway & back and it's all spritely again! :)
